“Okay Room; Poor Service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2014

A good friend and I (and my dog) recently stayed for 3 nights to celebrate my 30th birthday. First, the positives: our room was very nice and spacious; beds were comfortable and the direct outside access for the dog was a great feature; hotel property is gorgeous and the views are breathtaking. On the negative side: the staff's attitudes (excluding the cleaning staff who were lovely) towards us ranged from indifferent to downright rude throughout our stay. For a hotel that advertises as truly "pet friendly" our dog was turned away numerous times, including for a specially booked afternoon tea where I was told upon booking that we could bring the dog with us. We promptly left and went to a lovely tea in neighboring Chipping Campden where we found loads of pet-friendly tea rooms, inns and restaurants. Overall, certainly a nice property but not worth the price compared to others in the area and service does not come close to the supposed 4+ star standard.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on trip advisor, I’m a little saddened by your comments especially in relation to the staff, as that is one of those areas we pride ourselves on and normally receive such excellent comments.

We do have dog friendly rooms, but I’m afraid we don’t allow dogs in the dining room. We do try to be flexible with allowing dogs in the other hotel public areas and lounges and as I’m writing this response there are guests taking dinner in the lounge with their dog. We did have a note on your reservation that you would be having tea with us during your stay at some point, but I believe when you came for tea on the Saturday afternoon the lounges were full with other guests.

I will speak with the member of staff who supervised tea that day, as although the lounge area was full, we could and should have offered to serve your tea either in your room or the conservatory area near the pool which was a little quiet, or of course asked you to wait a while until suitable space in the lounges became free.

Thank you for your kind comments in relation to other aspects of your stay and sorry we let ourselves down, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you would like to discuss the matter further.

Kind Regards

went for sunday lunch yesterday and it did not disappoint! Excellent food, friendly staff, excellent service, lovely place and good value for money. What more can one ask? Sat outside having coffee afterwards reading the papers - so tranquil and pretty. Cannot wait to return and stay for the first time!

We visited here after randomly coming across it online so we were a bit sceptical about what it was going to be like. We have to say hands down it is one of the best places we have ever stayed! On arrival we were upgraded to a four poster suite in the main house which had amazing views. The staff are so friendly and there is nothing they won't do for you.....we felt utterly spolit! The only bad thing and this is coming from my partner, is that there aren't any lagers on tap BUT it really didn't matter as everything else more than made up for it. The pool area is lovely and quiet and very clean. We are so impressed with the Charningworth that we are returning in 3 weeks time with our parents to celebrate my mum's 60th and are very much looking forward to it! Fantastic location, superb food, exceptional staff! Keep up the good work!

Wife and I stayed 2 days B&B Feb 2014. Room ok, bathroom clean and tidy, furniture in room a little tired but ok. Swimming pool good but no hottub. Good breakfast, quality of sausage, bacon etc all very good. Service excellent. Only slight downfalls would be 1) room furniture needs updating, 2) driveway into hotel in atrocious state, needs fixing 3) overall feel of hotel is that it is a little tired, carpets, curtains fixtures and fittings all feel little past their best. We had dinner 1 day in Hotel, service good, food nice but we have definitely had better.

Dear Guests

Thank you for your review and comments, I can say, now the appalling wet weather is hopefully behind us, the driveway has had the pot holes repaired, with a full resurfacing due in the next couple of months.
We do hope to be able to welcome you back and please don’t hesitate to contact me if i can help further.

Stayed here in February with my wife for a much needed break for a few days. Lovely Location about 45mins from Cheltenham and just over an hour away from Gloucester, but you do need a car to get around. Strattford was only 11 miles north.

Our room was in the original house on the first floor, rooms were very clean and tidy. Very comfortable and staff were on hand to with any problems we had. If tall like myself just beware of the low beams in the Main House, as I often hit them both in our room and downstairs but has lovely character.

Food was a buffet & cooked breakfast with good selection of fruit juices. Food was excellent in the evenings very much like a french fine dining experience, staff were excellent we were very impressed with Andrew who was very helpful with items to try and could explain the choices.

We used the Swimming pool which was lovely well looked after and towels were supplied and was open from 7am to 9pm.

Would love to stay here again

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent

Beautiful old hotel that is well renovated. Atmospheric. Great service. We stayed there for my birthday with our 3 young children. Had a lovely bottle of champagne on ice waiting of us when we arrived. Children had a great time running around the hotel corridors and outside gardens. Food was excellent and not just the adults food but also the children's meals. Not the usual dry chicken nuggets or boring burger but healthy, wholesome meals for the little ones. Highly recommend this lovely hotel.

We met friends here for a 2 night break at the end of January and enjoyed it so much that my husband and I extended our stay to 3 nights including the Saturday night.

Our ground floor room in the newer wing was extremely comfortable. It was roomy, well appointed and spotlessly clean. There were doors leading to a little garden with patio, table and chairs which would be lovely in warmer weather.

Breakfast and dinner was lovely with a good choice of beautifully presented, well prepared dishes. Waiting staff were professional, friendly and helpful as were all of the staff we met during our time at Charingworth.

We used the small pool, sauna and steam room which was more than adequate and much appreciated. The drawing rooms are lovely areas in which to relax with a drink and newspaper or conversation.

We look forward to returning.
