“Lovely house, disappointing attitude of owner”
Reviewed 8 July 2014 for a stay in June 2014

This is undoubtedly a charming house. At over £2,000 before the school holidays even start, however, one does have high expectations. We were lucky to have glorious weather.

The house itself is lovely, full of period charm – more a large extended cottage than a grand house, so the living room and dining room are not massive for eight people. It is beautifully done out, with some lovely lighting features, mostly to a high quality, ample nice toiletries and towels are provided and there were lots of lovely goodies to eat (and drink) when we arrived, the house was mostly very clean.

The gardens are lovely too with comfortable seating (only for 6 though unless you count the two loungers) and parasol. The downside of ‘character’ is that there are several steps on each floor as well as in the garden and the staircase going upstairs does not have a handrail so it may not suit those with minor mobility problems. There are lots of low doorways which will have tall people ducking and 2 bathrooms and one bedroom are in the narrow roof space with very low coombed ceilings and exposed beams which leave even the shortest wary of banging their head. The thick walls mean the wifi does not reach all rooms in the house.

The kitchen is lovely with 2 sinks, a wine cooler, Miele appliances and window seats, the American style fridge with icemaker was very handy. It took us a while to get the hang of the range cooker and induction hob, more instructions would be helpful but maybe we just didn’t find them.

The description does not accurately convey the en suite bathrooms I feel; one en suite is indeed a bathroom straight off the bedroom, the first floor master en suite is directly off the bedroom but is in the roof space above reached by thirteen stairs, it is not visible from the bedroom but there is no door. The second floor en suite is actually separate to the bedroom (this may be an advantage to some though it didn’t have a lock), it is also 3 or 4 steps higher than the bedroom. There are 4 bathrooms plus a downstairs toilet - not 7 as stated on Tripadvisor.

Parts of the house were overdue a lick of paint, the settees were a bit tired and I think for the money they could splash out on a newer tv or at least a remote as the ‘1’ button didn’t work.

Our bed was comfy with nice cotton pillowcases and top sheet, thought it odd to have a flannelette sheet below though.

We did have a few grumbles; the DVD player simply did not work, the shower above the first floor master bedroom was slightly temperamental and did not work at all one day, most of the rest of the time we did not get water from both shower heads and there was no airer or washing line for drying clothes though there was a tumble drier. These matters were raised with the owner; she was slow to respond and really quite dismissive. On the DVD player she commented it was definitely working 3 weeks ago! She did suggest we made sure it wasn’t on the hard drive, but on checking it was completely dead, we texted to say this (we had been told we could text her though she didn’t always have mobile coverage) and never got a response, though I had thought she might contact us to see if we’d got it working anyway. On an airer for drying clothes she said there should be one ‘but sometimes people wander off with stuff’ and suggested we drape everything around the range! In the end I hung the washing on coat hangers from the tree in the garden. By the time we spoke to her about the shower it was working, if not fully, she seemed a bit vague about how it should work. There was no apology or so much as an offer to resolve the issues, just a swift change of subject. I didn’t push it as being on holiday I didn’t want to get into a stressful argument. Her attitude was very disappointing though.

There is ample off street parking, we were able to fit 3 cars without blocking anyone in, but more could be lined up the drive. Being on the corner of the main road meant there was a certain amount of traffic noise.

We have information stating this house does not accept pets, but see now it says they do and a previous reviewer mentions dogs, as we have two dog allergy sufferers in our party this is important to us, fortunately they suffered no ill effects.

The area is lovely, but the local pubs, shops and restaurants are quite expensive. If you can afford this place that probably isn’t an issue for you.

Top Tip; close the blind in the bathroom if you don’t want the passing bus passengers watching you and don’t put the hand cream on before you’ve opened the door!

Thank you for your review of Wolds End House. We’re glad that you found it a lovely home and you appreciated the effort the owner, Deborah went to in providing a hamper and fresh flowers for your arrival. We feel that providing some wonderful local produce for our guests, particularly those who have paid the peak summer rate creates a warm welcome.

Wolds End House is a Grade II listed building dating back to the 18th century. With this in mind, there are many wonderful character features including flagstone floorings, exposed brickwork and original beams. We do ask that guests take care as this character does also mean that there are some low ceilings, a few steps between rooms, steep stairs and uneven steps in the garden. Wolds End House is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy with the number of bathrooms advertised on Trip Advisor, this was absolutely an oversight on our part. There are indeed not 7 bathrooms, but 5 in total made up of 3 en-suites, 1 family bathroom and a downstairs cloakroom. This has now been corrected.

Having discussed your constructive criticism with Deborah, a number of upgrades to Wolds End House have been made. A new airer has been purchased as we appreciated that not all guests wish to use the tumble dryer or hang clothes over the range. A new DVD player has been purchased, as well as a cord to connect your iPad and film collection to the TV. Please note, any guests wishing to use this will need to bring their own iPad TV adapter however.

It was found following your stay however that there was nothing wrong with the shower in the master en-suite on the 1st floor. Subsequent guests have also not experienced any trouble with this. Great pride has been taken with the interior design of Wolds End House and as such you will find some lovely individual pieces of furniture and plush upholstery. The sofas in the living room are Duresta quality dressed sofas, the linen and towels are all from The White Company and John Lewis, toiletries provided are from REN. A further two light weight garden chairs can be found under the Loggia.

Wolds End House does now accept well behaved dogs, but they are not allowed on furniture or upstairs. I am glad to hear none of your party experienced any allergic reactions and that the property was cleaned to the high standard we endeavour to ensure.

Thank you for your feedback, we do appreciate the time taken to write your review. I do hope that in light of your mobility challenges this did not distract too much from an enjoyable stay.

“Lovely house for a long weekend in the Cotswolds”

This is a great house for a group of friends as it has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms . It is very well equipped and centrally located in beautiful Chipping Campden. It took us a while to get the hang of the Aga but felt quite at home and thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend.
