Description: Located in the luxurious Cotswold House in the centre of Chipping Campden, Bistro-on-the-Square is the hub of the hotel, serving drinks and meals throughout the day. The more laid back sister of the elegant Fig. Restaurant, The Bistro boasts the same kitchen team, under the expert guidance of Head Chef Pasquale Russo. The Bistro has its own street entrance, an open fire and bar, as well as al-Fresco dining in the summer. Our specialty is a relaxed and informal dining experience with Sharing platters, Tapas. We have a wide menu to suit all tastes, including children's menu. We pride ourselves on the extensive range of Gins, wines by the glass and cocktails.

Since our last visit , the brasserie has had some changes , the hotel's main restaurant is closed and the food and style of Hicks has been upgraded . The room is the same but with tablecloths and better tableware in the evenings , it does lack a bit of atmosphere though , but sure that at weekends it is busy. The new chef has really improved the menu , interesting and tasty food , beautiful presentation , every dish was a success ! The service was good but could be a little sharper , some staff are excellent , some look like they can't wait for the shift to end . The prices , like everything , have gone up a bit and there is no early diner option but the food is worth it , if not cheap. We have been eating there for 10 years and this is maybe the best it has been ! Worth a visit , but no bargain !! S

Ate here several years ago and had a lovely family lunch. Not this time:

Service humourless and somewhat stuffy. Didn't seem to know how to deal with small (well behaved!) children.

Food was cooked and presented OK, but portions were absolutely 'miniscule'.
If you are charging nearly £18 for the John Dory, and then substituting it for Sea Bass (the smallest example of this fish i've ever seen!), you need to put something else on the plate other than a sauce.

Accompaniments (charged extra) were also laughably small.

Oh, and drinks prices bordering on extortionate: £4.50 for 2 small glasses of plain soda water.

Avoid.

The food was good but not exceptional and the atmosphere was a little stade mid week. I imagine that maybe on a weekend or friday night then it livens up with locals and weekenders etc. To be fair, the main restaurant is more of a foodie's preference.

Service was poor. Beer was off. Portions were small and lacked flavour.Starter, 3 distinctly undernourished prawns masquerading as 'King' for £7.95.

Steak, not cooked to specifications -good vet could have worked some magic.

All in all, the party (of 4) felt ripped off - at least Dick Turpin wore a mask!

Dear Theodore11

Whilst I must apologise for any poor experience you received in 2010, the review is no longer relevant to the restaurant that now occupies the site. The business has changed, been re branded and is a different look, identity, staff, and menu.

We do hope you drop by some time and try again, and hopefully we will have the opportunity to show you how much it has changed and that what may have happened all that time ago (whilst still affecting our ranking) is no longer relevant to this restaurant.

I would happy to show you around, and personally oversee your visit.

Kind Regards
Craig Webb

After good experiences for the last 15 years Monday night will be our last. We had noticed previously that all of the starters offered were cold but the main lamb dish was dreadful. Fortunately there are many other good restaurants in the Cotswold
