Great beers, really good food, and a proper old-fashioned pub interior... what more could you ask for?!

“Cooked by someone who cares”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

The menu and composition of the dishes at the Ox demonstrates that someone in the kitchen actually cares about food. They are not simply satisfied with offering up the same old unimaginative fare that many so-called gastro pubs present. For instance, the chicken pie isn't simply served up with chips and peas. Instead it came with black pudding and perfectly cooked cabbage and mashed potato that set off the wonderful gravy. We would rate that pie better than those at Annie's (also in Manchester, and pretty good as well).
My piri piri chicken was a full-on, powerful dish - packed with flavour and heat...and of a standard that exceeds many of the dishes that the (pretty good) Indian restaurants on the same street offer. Serious pieces of chirozo sausage, (Jamie Oliver's team in Manchester should maybe eat here to learn what a dish made with proper sausage should look like!)....and decent pieces of chicken and vegetables in dish made it a really hearty and a thoroughly enjoyable dish.

Add to all of this the fact that the staff were relaxed and friendly, and you can get Timothy Taylors and Black Sheep bitters served perfectly...and well, for me it's a winning combination. One starter and one pudding on top of the two main courses, all for £30 excluding drinks.

There used to be a fantastic chef at the Baltic Fleet pub in Liverpool ten years ago. The food at that time was really 'home-cooked', tasty and piping hot. (believe me, this is what is required in December next to the Mersey!). The Ox is the nearest we have experienced to the Baltic Fleet in its heyday. What made the Fleet not just good, but truly great, was that you could always rely on the quality, every time: it never let you down.
Clearly the folks at the Ox have the ability and passion to produce the same standard of really nice food. Judging by some mixed reviews by others, there is plenty of evidence that you can get a great meal here. The tricky part is to consistently do this ...every single time. I wish them all the very best and hope that they do this....this is definitely the sort of place that we need to keep in this country...city pubs with great beer and great food.

“Great food and beer, but only stop over if you want a cheap room”
Reviewed 16 June 2013

Eaten here many times before and as i was in manchester for 3 days i thought i'd book somewhere different to a chain hotel. Evening food was excellent as was the beer, albeit food a little pricey for what is afterall a pub, but the rooms are very basic although what did i expect given the price for city centre manchester

“Disappointed”
Reviewed 9 June 2013

Positives: Staff friendly. Bed comfy & sheets & towels clean. Negatives: Restaurant very over priced (rump steak nearly £17) and food mediochre. Gastro pub, it's not! This pub is not in the city centre and food is more expensive and inferior than one we did visit there. Room, very dated and dingy. Drab 'well used' furniture. Bathroom, drab and shower not draining away properly. Situated on busy road and traffic passing almost all night, hardly any sleep. Tea/coffee making stuff, but no glasses. A bar of soap in bathroom, that's it. This is not anywhere near 3*. Almost £70 a night! Won't be staying again.
