The Crowne Plaza Is one of the most extraordinary hotels I have ever stayed in. The ground floor has a good, bright bar (great service in here!) but the upstairs decor is how I imagine a New York bachelor pan looked circa 1987. Long, black/grey corridors lit only by red and green spotlights lead to smallish rooms in which smoked glass plays a prominent role. Just as you think that you are in a timewarp or bad detective drama, check out the bathroom which is white, glistening and modern. Truly a Franken hotel...

Manchester in a City in transition and the hotel is excellently located for the cafes, renovated warehouses and vintage shops of the Northern Quarter. The concierges are bright and knowledgeable. Strangely, there seems to be a disconnect between shifts as requests made with day staff (e.g. "please can you send this bag to my room?) are not carried out and evening staff claim no knowledge of them. I know that I was not alone in experiencing this as the hotel only has Wifi on the ground floor and I was obliged to spend a happy hour checking e-mails and listening to complaints from other guests.

So what makes this hotel worthwhile? The beds.... The beds.... The beds.... Marshmallow like pillows and mattresses which support yet cocoon. Heaven. You can almost forgive the hideous and fluffy dark grey carpet and forget the fact that you can barely see when you wake up from a perfect night's sleep. For a business hotel, isn't this one of the most important criteria?

So, I can't decide... Zero service, yes... Weird decor, yes... Poor IT infrastructure, yes... But, oh, the beds!

Spotlessly clean, impeccable decor, extremely comfy bed(!!). Very good value for money.

My Fiancee and I were in town to attend an evening of Hallowe'en Rock n Roll with Rock Radio Manchester at 'The Ritz', and managed to get a room here. VERY glad we stayed here, and not the other place we'd booked and had to cancel due to the bad reviews on trip advisor (They CAN influence choice, so do be honest, and give praise where it's due..)

Marvellous!

Stayed the one night at the Crowne Plaza. I'd say the room was obviously the highlight of the hotel. The check - in was done by VERY un-enthusiastic reception staff... Having worked in the hotelier industry myself i guess i know what you're expected to do in your job and i just didnt find the reception staff as welcoming as i'd have liked...
Having said that, for a standard room, it was immaculate and worth the price. The in-room amenities were lovely and the sleeping aids were a thoughtful touch however bath robes and slippers were expected. The bed was one of the comfiest if not the comfiest beds i have stayed in away from home! I did not want to get outta bed the next morning and had wished we'd got a late check-out! mind you this could be due to my killer hangover...
Glad we didnt opt for breakfast though, and kept it room only. From what ive heard it's not worth what they charge, and location wise being in the Northern Quarter of Manchester there are so many other cheap, chic, and more heartier places just a moments walk away to eat.
Would definately stay again at the Crowne Plaza.

We stayed at this hotel during the British Swimming Championships (which were held at the aquatics centre on the opposite side of Manchester) and as a result the comfy beds and pillows were very welcome ahead of a day of swimming. The hotel had a modern and slightly quirky design with the coloured windows and very interesting toilets adjoining the lobby! Our club room wasn't on the club floor, apparently they only have two club rooms with two double beds and these were both on the 2nd or 3rd floor (I don’t recall which). This wasn't a big problem, there was a door requiring a key card separating these two rooms from the other rooms on that floor so it was lovely and quite and the rooms were large rooms, right at the end of the hotel building. The room was light and airy with a huge floor to ceiling window (but no coloured glass in our room) a large TV and nice (if a little small) bathroom with White Company toiletries. Only real pointer with the room was that the second door separating just our room and one other meant it was very hard when someone tried to visit our room because they couldn't knock on our door! A minor point, but perhaps some kind of buzzer here could allow a person to tell whichever room they are visiting that they are outside. Also we were a very little bit disappointed our club room didn't benefit from the nice views of the club floor (on the 8th floor at the top of the hotel), but again a small fault and the large room more than made up for it. Back to the positives, the club lounge was great. A choice of complimentary drinks, computers with a printer (great for checking and printing the swimming results from the internet) and a member of staff on duty at all times. This room was a nice place to sit, with great views through large windows, and had the same quirky furnishings and art work as the rest of the hotel (the art was a little pricy though, with one abstract painting around £1500! Can't see them selling too many of them to the un-expecting guest!)

The service, throughout the hotel, was excellent and the concierge was superb. The restaurant was a mixed experience. We had eaten lunch there on our first day and the food and service were fantastic, although the restaurant was virtually empty and thus somewhat lacking in atmosphere. The next night was, strangely, different. Equally good food and great atmosphere this time in the nice airy dinning room, but "interesting" service. Infact the service would have probably ruined the meal if it had not been for one fantastic waitress who managed to turn the various faults of other staff into joking and humorous conversation and managed to rectify our problems. Admittedly we did get most of the meal free in order to appease us for the long waiting times and misplaced orders, but if it hadn't been for this one waitress, who dealt with the situation excellently, we wouldn't have been too happy. The bar was a nice area with prompt service.

All in all, a great stay in a great hotel. The quirky modernity of the hotel may not be to everyone’s tastes, we usually stay in more traditional hotels, but loved this all the same.

Room Tip: Get club rooms for club lounge acess, good value

Me and my Mum stayed here on a Sunday night after watching Take That play at the Manchester of City Stadium. This hotel is the nearest one you will find to the stadium and also great location for the city centre and train station.
We had a club room and i can say it was one of the best i have ever stayed in.
The Club Lounge was maybe a little disappointing as it was quite dirty where splillages had been made by the coffee machine, however liked the free alcohol between 6 - 8pm.
The bed was so comfy and the breakfast again i thought was superb. Great choice and very nice.
I love Manchester and would love to come back to this hotel and will definately recommend to anyone.

Check in was fine, pleasant staff.
Room was very modern and clean, with good facilties.
View wasnt great though, a bit of a building site, and a spar shop!
Location was good for concert we were going to, and location good for meals/drinks and shopping areas.
Breakfast was total let down - there was a 20 min wait, in which we were just hanging around whilst staff tried to set tables, when we did get a table, much of the buffet was depleted, as was the tea and coffee, i had to ask for muesli, fruit and tea. The overall standard of food was ok, but nothing like as good as other 4* hotel chains. It was not a relaxing experience as I was hoping for, yes it was Sunday morning, but we didnt arrive late. Every week has a sunday anyway so you think the staff would be used to it!!!

I'd stay again but book room only and eat breakfast out!

Really liked this hotel on the whole, the room was excellent and the food good. We had access to a club room and free wi-fi too.

The one minor issue was that it advertised concierge parking which wasn't available, you had to find and pay for parking, which was plentiful in the area but an expense we hadn't anticipated.

Fantastic for city centre shopping or business and within easy walking distance of coach station.
