We stayed on Saturday 23rd for one night and enjoyed the "sunday soother" package booked direct with Crown Plaza.
I booked a few weeks before, then logged into my priority rewards to online to check the booking and saw it had been reduced by £40 so it is worth checking prices again. This reduction was honoured by the call staff on the booking line.
We arrived early and stored our bag with the concierge which was handy, we didn't find it too difficult on foot to find the hotel and thought it was a good location.
We had booked a deluxe club room, upgraded to a junior suite by Maddy on reception. We had a lovely room, it was very clean. Only point was we could hear more noise being on the 1st floor but this is not the fault of the staff and it is after all a city hotel.
The room was really clean and we were not bothered by house keeping noise. I did ask for the second bathrobe and commented to reception that it seemed to be set up for one person as there was only one small set of toiletries - yet two sinks in the bathroom etc. But really overall an excellent room. The shower is on the small side for a 6 foot man but the bath was of a good size.
We had breakfast, dinner and lunch all in the glasshouse restaurant. We were very happy with the food and had no complaints about the service. We would highlight Magdalene as offering excellent service. Coffee and tea was good, and the drink in the club room was excellent.
We had been booked for sunday dinner, we were the only ones in the restaurant at 2pm on Sunday afternoon and thought we might not get the best meals, especially when we were informed the advertised roast beef was off the menu, however we were served two rib eye steaks and they were gorgeous. We don't feel that the hotel merits some of its more negative reviews especially on the food.
The late checkout of 3pm for the sunday soother package was a good bonus. However we did find ourselves shut out of the room and club room before this when the key card automatically expired but this was resolved quickly by reception.
On the Saturday night we chose to eat in the hotel, there were only three couples in the restaurant but there was a huge dinner for all the torch relay people in another part of the hotel. We were never really aware of this and were served quickly and our meals were good.
On Sunday morning they served breakfast for the torch relay people at 4.30 onwards - but again we were not aware of this and enjoyed our breakfast at 9.00. It was never too busy.
If anything we could not believe how quiet the restaurant is with the promotions it is offering and the food being of a good standard. It was a bit sad to see it so empty when other places nearby had a long waiting time to being seated.
The club room is a lovely bonus if you have the time to spend in it. We never found it too busy. The staff servicing the club room were helpful and pleasant. The red wine was lovely.
We found that when we spoke with staff they did pass the time of day and were helpful, but of course they are keeping the hotel running and need to serve efficiently.
We would definitely return, but might request a higher room to avoid the night time noise. We would choose a club level room again for the lounge use, as the bar was quite busy at times.
We don't get away very often now but previously have stayed in most of the top ten manchester hotels and we felt that his hotel deserved to be higher than its current rating of 6th on trip advisor.
