“Excellent Hotel - Highly Recommended”
Reviewed 20 October 2009

The Crowne Plaza Manchester is a new, modern hotel with outstanding decor that stretches to the bedrooms. In our room, we had large, floor-to-ceiling windows, a wide-screen TV and a huge bed with a modern stylish chair and footrest. We only paid £69 in advance and booked a standard room which was more than adequate for us. Great location for the MEN arena and city centre.

We didn't eat at the hotel, but the food looked good! The staff were very welcoming and attentive and we had no issues at all.

I would return to this hotel in the future with confidence.

I booked this place as a treat on our travels around England. I was very happy with the dinner and breakfast and the room was lovely. It had everything you would expect however the location is difficult. I had a hire car and with only a small pull area at the front of a busy street I was stuck unloading luggage at the side of the hotel in the rain. The car park is located a short walk away and while the hotel gives you a discount, it was a hassle. Hotel is a short distance from nightlife and shops which was good.

My husband, 15 yr old son & I stayed here overnight for free as a "reward night" as a Priority Club member bonus. We had just attempted to watch a 20/20 cricket match at Old Trafford, England V Australia, which was rained off so were feeling a bit miserable! Upon arrival staff were welcoming, helpful, polite and courteous. Parking was close by and discounted overnight for hotel guests. The room was large, spacious, luxurious, contemporary, spotless and very comfortable. We had 2 double beds and the decor was sumptuous in black, red & white. The bathroom was gorgeous with a nice deep bath & power shower, plenty of towels, bathrobe, toiletries etc. We had a meal in the nearby Hard Rock Cafe which topped off our evening nicely. Breakfast wasn't included in the room booking so we ate elsewhere as it was very pricey but the restaurant did look lovely and am sure the meals would be to the usual Crowne Plaza standard. The back of the hotel overlooked a bit of a building site as there seemed to be roadworks and on-going improvements in the area but I would highly recommend to couples, families and groups - cut keep an eye out for offers on the website as although I like nice hotels & don't like paying over the odds for them, it's the Yorkshire woman in me!

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza during Pride Aug '09. I have mixed feelings on this hotel.

We paid about £70 per night for our room, which we thought was very fair. I wouldn't suggest anyone pay much more than that to stay at the Crowne Plaza.

For some reason (perhaps because we had booked a non-flexible room in advance) we were given a free upgrade upon arrival - which was brilliant!

Our friends booked at the same time, but booked a flexible room (i.e. they could cancel at any time) and weren't offered an upgrade.

THE GOOD:
> Our room was gorgeous - very spacious, with two king beds, modern lounge chair, plasma TV, black glossy decor, a huge window overlooking the city and a fabulous, clean, modern bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. The beds are very high and very comfortable. I would stay in that type of room again, very happily.

> The location was good for the town centre - only about 5 minute walk around the back of the Arndale shopping centre.

> The bar/restaurant prices were not outrageous. The second-cheapest bottle of champagne was about £32 and was actually very good - they sent this up to our room without fuss.

> There is a Spar with cashpoint next to the hotel which is very handy.

THE BAD
> There are NO ceiling lights in the room! This becomes a real problem when trying to get ready for a night out and you literally can't see what's in your handbag.

> At night, the walk from the Arndale did feel a little unsavoury - very dark and quiet, going past a small nightclub and a few seedy off-licenses on the way. I would not recommend you walk alone if you are a solo female traveller.

> The room our friends stayed in was very small, with just one nightstand between the two beds, with a narrow floor to ceiling window, overlooking some derelict buildings, and with cheap-ish red decor. My friend really wasn't happy with her room!

> Our friends had a few problems with service:
After ordering a bottle of wine for their room, they were told to come down to reception because my friend had used a different card to the one she had used to book the room! Why this should matter, we didn't know. We had arrived late and were in a rush to get ready and go out - very inconvenient for my friend to have to treck down to reception with hair wet from the shower. We wondered what the point of room service was.

We also booked a taxi through reception to Canal Street. Not only did it take over 20 minutes to arrive (with us waiting outside in the freezing cold), but the receptionists seemed to have no idea which cabs were for which people on their list - so we got queue-jumped by a confused couple staying at the hotel. The receptionists didn't communicate with us at all and we found it unprofessional and completely inconvenient, since we could have walked there in the dark quicker.

Overall -
I would recommend this hotel simply because of the aesthetic value for money - especially our room, which must have been something like a 'superior twin'. It would also be good for proximity to the Arndale Centre.

I would not recommend this hotel for personal service.

Crowne Plaza really need to work on their staff training - I have never left one of their hotels feeling valued, individual or cared for by their staff.

Whilst you can bag bargain rooms at their hotels, they seems to want to separate themselves from budget chains and should improve their service in order to acheive a real 4* status.

Bottom line - if you can get a room for £70, it's worth a pop. Just don't expect a smile!

I stayed here for work for a whole week. I used to live in Manchester so when our bus pulled up outside the Hotel and I saw what part of town we were staying in I was very, very happy... Nice friendly trendy bars just a step away, Chinese art centre, and all the city centre a simple 5 minute walk away and 10 minutes from the MEN Arena...

The staff was young and very very friendly, good sense of humor and service. They gave us free internet (I imagine cause we were a group deal thing) and they also have a 24h gym, so services were exceptional too.

Nice large room, with 2 double beds!, large window, a shower and a bath tub in the bathroom, a massive plasma screen on the wall (not that you'll spend that much time watching telly with so much to see round the area)... One of the best Hotels we stayed at the whole summer.

I don't know how much it cost cause the company covered the bill, but most Hotels we stayed at weren't that expensive, so I imagine it had to be a cheap deal.

THis hotel has so much going for it I find my experience slightly dissapointing. On arrival i was allocated a room on the 4 floor. It was clean and tidy but it was clear the room had been adapted for disabled guests, now as someone who doesn't on principle park in a disabled bay at a supermarket or railway station i felt uncomfortable using a disabled room - more of a fraud. I wasn't asked if this was an acceptable room and unless all other rooms are fitted out this way - I think I should have been asked.

Secondly in the morining after showering - and obviously after every one else in the other rooms had showered the drains began to smell! Clearly there is a problem with the traps but regardless of the reason the bathroom and eventually the room were overcome by this smell.

Overall what could have been a very positive stay left me slightly jaded.

Overall this was very disappointing.

the rooms in this hotel are fab. large comfortable double bed and plenty of room but best of all...the bathroom with large bath and separate walk-in shower which was almost too powerful. have stayed in the Hilton in Manchester and this hotel is at least as good. NCP parking just across the road. Arndale Centre close by and The Printworks has loads of eateries. If you love curry though I recommened a taxi or 30 minute walk to fantastic Akbar's on Liverpool Rd. It is brilliant.
