If like me you stay in chain hotels all the time, it makes a refreshing change to stay somewhere that has a bit of character. The rooms are all different, I have stayed in several and they are all decorated very well. The bathroom is lovely and I like the rubber duck! Yes it can be noisy but take some ear plugs along, it's rare for hotels nowadays not to be noisy. If you can afford to get one of the balcony rooms. Agreed the breakfast isn't the best (last time my poached eggs tasted of vinegar yak) but overall don't let this put you off. definitely recommended, every time I'm here for work in Manchester I book this hotel and have just booked up for next week and July.

From the moment we arrived we knew we had picked the right hotel. Manchester was the first stop on our long European journey and we decided to make sure our first hotel was memorable. Our three night stay at the Velvet didn't disappoint. We stayed in one of the Penthouse Suites and we found the room thoughtfully furnished. The bed was comfortable (we like a firm bed), the bathroom had two sinks so there was no fighting over the space and the lounge fantastic to sink into at the end of a long day on our feet. We like to fall asleep watching TV and was very thankful that as well as having a TV in the lounge area, the upstairs bedroom area had a TV in it as well. We were able to connect a HDMI cable from our laptop to the TV's so we could watch some shows we brought with us when we got over the local channels.
The service in general was fantastic. The staff were all very friendly. The one very minor issue we had with our stay was that our iPod dock in the room wasn't working. We notified a staff member of this who came to check it out but this problem was not rectified by the time we checked out.
When we arrived at Manchester Airport the customs entry staff said that the hotel was great and that we should also eat in the restaurant downstairs at the Velvet. We tried the restaurant one night and were both happy with our meals.
We usually don't like to stay in the same hotel twice but if we ever make it back to Manchester we will be sure to make the Velvet our first choice.

Myself and my husband have stay in this hotel twice. Th hotel itself is beautiful and the staff were very helpful. Being on Canal Street, I found it quite noisy during the night and it also sounded as though someone was walking on the roof. The breakfast was ok (there were some out of date yoghurts on the breakfast selection). Regardless of this I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Being on Canal Street it could be noisy whichever room you are in.

We stayed two nights and would stay again. The hotel is a few minutes from Piccadilly Station and very comfortable. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the decor in the rooms has more style than your average hotel.

I was very disappointed with this hotel after reading all the glowing reports on Tripadvisor. We asked for a quiet room and were given a third floor room at the back, we noticed the extractor fan noise but were told this would go off at 10pm. It didn't of course, we complained to desk staff but as they were fully booked they were unable to give us another room. We were given the Penthouse suite which was quieter for our second night.
The beds and bedding were only of an average qualityWhilst the bathrooms were clean it might be a good idea if someone remembered to clean the edges and corners of some of the floors in the hotel.
We left feeling tired after two restless nights in this hotel. We expected more from a Hotel at the top of Tripadvisors list.

I really enjoyed my one night stay at Velvet. The reception staff were friendly, the rooms were opulently decorated, and the service was old-fashioned in the best possible sense. I haven't been shown up to my room anywhere for a long time - so that was very nice! After checking in, you're offered a hot drink, which they bring to you on a welcome tray complete with biscuits, ice, and sliced lemon - what a nice touch. The rooms are well appointed. I stayed in the most basic, and it didn't feel small in any way. The only downside is the windows are high up and you can't see out - I'd recommend booking a balcony room to combat this.

You get fresh coffee in your room, REN toiletries in the bathroom, a nice robe & slippers - it's everything you'd expect from a great hotel. In fact, the whole experience reminded me of what the Malmaison used to be like before their properties started to look a little shabby and the staff stopped caring so much.

If I did have to criticise, I'd say the breakfast isn't the best in Manchester - but it's still of a high standard. The bar downstairs is nice enough - I didn't eat in the restaurant but I saw plenty of people heading that way.

Will be back for sure!

Velvet is well located for shopping, galleries, museums and night-life and the hotel provided an ideal base for exploring Manchester. The staff were polite and welcoming and those little touches like providing a welcome tray with fresh milk, lemon and lime slices, and a jar of cookies and shortbread made check-in an enjoyable experience.
The room was clean and well decorated (although the photography on the walls may be a little risque for some) and the attention to detail was excellent. Would definitely stay again.
