What a gem of a hotel - it was fab. The welcome was excellent, personal and friendly but not obsequious. The room was a real surprise - it was gorgeous and every thought had been taken care of. The bed was really comfortable as well as stunning. The ratio of quality/price cannot be faulted. The little touches the hotel put into the rooms and service well surpassed my expectations at the price paid. I would definitely stay again without hesitation.
Grumbles? Nothing really. A little bedside table for that delicious fresh coffee supplied would be good, and a little more lighting perhaps ....
But highly recommended.

The Velvet is in a prime location right on the heart of Canal Street surrounded by fun bars and restaurants. The hotel is glitzy and glam in decor and features. We stayed in room 31 a beautiful oriental themed room, very spacious with a great bathroom, complete with a rubber duck! The staff were marvellous from start to finish with a particular mention to Mohammad who went above and beyond his role to make us very comfortable. The restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced with a good range of options. The bar served great cocktails and a had a fun atmosphere. We would definitely stay at the Velvet again!

I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights with my boyfriend for the weekend. I've stayed in loads of hotels in manchester and just decided to get something different. Our flights landed us in early so when we got to the hotel our room wasnt ready, mind we did turn up before 11am so i didnt expect it to be. the reception staff were lovely and took our cases for us as we were going to the football match.
when we got back we were showed to our room and the lady gave us all the info we would need which saved us the job of going round and flicking, testing and guessing with switches.
the room was stunning, we were in room 35 which had a balcony and it was just stunning - the pics dont do it justice!
we went out for the evening and when we came back we were greeted to chocs on the bed, refill of ice and lemon & lime for the drinks....and turn down service! very impressed!
the weekend was lovely and i enjoyed my stay. the only negative thing i would say was when i did have to ring reception on the saturday evening, it rang out 3 times with no answer but i suppose it would have been busy at that time and it was only the floor below so i just nipped down.
i would recommed this hotel to everyone and anyone and think i shall be returning in the very near future!
oh and the brekkie is fantastic, its a must!!!
fab hotel, fab location, fab staff and well deserving of its number 1 spot!!!!

I was looking for a romantic getaway Hotel in Manchester and struck lucky with the Velvet Hotel. I would recommend it without hesitation to any couple. There is a great service by the staff, very personal, Stuart arrived after a few minutes with a welcome tray.
I requested if possible Room 15 which looked the most romantic, with the purple decor. It was perfect, i have stayed in quite a few and this is up there as one of the best. Its easy to find on Canal Street, it's location wasn't a problem, i was aware it was the 'Gay Village', but it didn't have any relevance whatsoever.
The staff were very helpful and i got the room i requested. I would definitely opt for Room 15, However, if it is a weekend night it is above the bar area, so i could imagine it would be pretty noisey. We stayed on a Sunday night, so it was quiet.
Everywhere is spotlessly clean, bathrooms are all new and beds super comfy.
I have booked to go back again already.

This was our first time in Velvet and it will definitely not be our last! From looking at the other reviews on TA you can see that the rooms are all individually styled and are almost a piece of art in themselves. Our room (number 22) was similarly unique from the “the Vetruvian man“styled wallpaper to the art décor feel of the room overall. Other little touches such as the I pod docking station, a complementary tray of fresh tea and biscuits on arrival, an evening turndown service, two free cocktails from the hotel bar, all lift the overall experience to another level and Velvet in my opinion has to be one of the of the best hotels I have stayed in the world never mind the UK. Car parking was easy in the nearby (500yards) NCP car park which after discount came to £11 overnight..

Overall the stay was a superb and of good value given that we booked the stay via late rooms at £110 for the night (excluding breakfast). The service was faultless and I would definitely recommend this hotel to those travellers looking for opulent luxury at an affordable price.

My husband and I have stayed here twice before, both time in penthouse suite 405. That room is lovely, both times were excellent stays. I would recommend the top floor rooms whole heartedly.

This time we stayed for Valentine's Day, as we did last year. We work very hard with our own businesses, and like to use hotels to have some quality time and relaxation. We stayed in room 35, (a Balcony King) pretty enough (though very small) but so noisy. There were bangs, clicks, thumps all day and night, and the walls are paper thin. I don't want to hear what my neighbours are upto thanks. Then from 3 am til 5 am, our ignorant neighbours were making such a din. I have M.E and rely on getting quality sleep, I wish I had stayed at home.

Perhaps we were spoilt the first 2 times in the penthouse, but there's no way I'd stay here in one of these rooms again to not sleep all night. We didn't phone reception, mainly because even if they had stopped the neighbour noise, they couldn't have stopped the doors banging, the clicks and the thumps. I am really disappointed. We told reception on the way out, and they were very sorry to hear of our trouble, but we were not offered any discount on a future stay, or money off for no sleep. It's the principle, my spouse and I are both business owners, and I would always resolve any issues so my customers return. I just felt a bit short changed.

The penthouses are lovely, but I'd give other rooms a miss if you fancy a day of shopping and a romantic night in. I am unlikely to stay here again which is a great shame, as the food is fanastic and I like the area.

My previous review:

My husband took me to Velvet for Valentine's Night; we stayed here in December for his birthday.
This hotel is amazing, it's always sad to leave.

Charming reception staff; quick check in, within 5 minutes of sitting in room welcome tray and 2 glasses of sparking with strawberries and lime pieces. nice little touches that add to the ambience.

We had a Penthouse again, room 405, with prices like this for a penthouse you cannot say no! Gorgeous rooms, great toiletries, very clean, very modern, perfect little hideaway.

With it being Valentine's, and also Chinese New Year, we wanted a quiet and romantic night in. We ordered room service, and within about 10 minutes the full order arrived! The food was delicious, cocktails sensational.

I will stay here again and again, as I just find it so nice and in such a convenient spot.

I am a very light sleeper, and I slept like a log.

Well done Velvet, we hope to see you again soon xxx

Velvet is a beautiful hotel, perfectly situated in the city centre for the night life, the good restaurants and the train station. The room we had was stunning - spacious, thought out, beautifully decorated and - though we expected some noise as reviews hinted at that - nice and quiet too. The staff were friendly and attentive and the whole experience was great. Rightly deserves to be #1
