We booked a table in advance, necessary by experience, told the waitress we just wanted drinks and she was absolutely fine with that. The band Chinese Marbles were amazing, covered tracks I've never heard covered before, maybe not Jazz - well some was but so much else.
Waitress was attentive, we could always catch her eye - unlike so many places, she checked ocassionally that we were OK. We had some cocktails, all well prepared and presented, but just as happy to serve anything.
It was packed, but still room to move, everybody having a good time irrelevent of age, students to OAPs and a Hen Party for good measure.
Drinks at regular bar prices plus £5 on the door for the music - BARGAIN.

We attended on the 8th November 2013 as part of our friends 50th birthday celebrations and what an incredible night it was! We were welcomed from the minute we set foot in the door. All the staff serving seemed like they enjoyed being there even though it must be very difficult with the volume and the amount of people to get through!! We met Peter, the owner, and his daughter Claire, what a fantastic family business to have. If you only do 1 thing in Manchester make sure its a night out at Matt and Phreds

I can't praise this venue enough! We had booked a table for the excellent jazz band, John King. We also went to the happy hour when you can have a free pizza with every two drinks bought. The ambience in the small club is exceptional, very intimate and the staff are very friendly. I will certainly be back!

This jazz club really is worlds apart from any of the bars in the Northern Quarter. It's fantastic. I went to see a friend's band play here and it was a fabulous atmosphere. I'd seen the same band play at several other venues but the jazz club set-up really suited them. The club is set up like an old-style jazz club with round tables that you can book in advance, and the acoustics are great. I think it's about £5 entry and I'd thoroughly recommend a visit for a good night out.

Matt and Phreds is a fantastic jazz club. I go frequently. The web site is good and always gives you a chance to check out tracks from who is playing.
My last visit a coupe of nights ago was excellent. Anthony Strong performed fantastically. There is a cover charge (£5.00) on Friday and Saturdays. Food is basic but good, mainly sharing dishes and pizzas. Friday and Saturday there are chef's specials, my only complaint was no vegetarian special. Service is great, friendly, efficient. If you have a table you get service at the table, so no trips to the bar.
They do take bookings, essential as they are usually full and it means you get a table.
Food and drink prices are reasonable by Manchester city centre prices.
They do appeal to a wide age range, with the advantage for the Northern Quarter of not attracting the stag and hen does. (aka idiots and tart parties).
