We were recently in the fortunate position of having to choose between The Lowry or The Midland. We chose The Midland primarily because of it's excellent location. The building is a big old lump of Victorian brick, impressive, imperial but not for fans of modern hotels. The room was comfortabe, the bed beautiful and the bathroom spotlessly clean. If I have one minor quibble it was that one corner of the room had a small stain that needed repainting (looked like a water leak) and the windows were fixed shut. I know this is probably in the interests of health and safety but surely if people are worried about their children then put a lock high up on the door, it would still be safe and people could have a choice as to whether they want air conditioning or a 'proper' breeze. This is not something limited to The Midland but wherever I come across it, it gets on my nerves.

After a very pleasant nights sleep we went for breakfast. This was excellent, a wide range of continental, cooked, fresh fruit and beverages. Our waitress, Beverley, was extremely friendly and welcoming, attentive without being intrusive, perfectly helpful. During our stay we encountered several staff and each one left us with the impression that nothing was too much trouble.

The Midland is an older hotel but there's nothing wrong with that. More improtantly, the staff have old fashioned values and this is The Midlands best asset.

Dear Matthew W,

Thank you for taking the time to review The Midland and for all your kind words they are appreciated.

Yes indeed we do have an unbelievable product to work in and how lucky are we to be able to show it off! However it is always pleasing to read that our great team, Bev included, ensure that all of are guests needs are being met and that they simply took the time to chat with as that is probably the difference between a functional and great hotel.

We look forward to your return and thank you once again.

We recently had Afternoon Tea in the magnificent Ocotgan lounge at the Midland. From the moment we walked in the hotel we knew we were in for a treat. The courteous staff made us very wellcome as we absorbed the grandeur of this beautiful building. We were quickly shown to our table that had been reserved for us and were made comfortable before being served with our delicious afternoon tea.We enjoyed the mouth watering menu, served beautifully by our attentive waiteress. We did not feel rushed in any way and was kept supplied with hot coffee throughout. After finishing our delightful tea, because we were enjoying our experience so much we decided to finish off our afternoon with a cocktail. We have been to other Manchester Hotels for afternoon tea but none beats the one that we had here at the Midland. The Hotel is very impressive, the staff first class and the attention to detail second to none.Needless to say we will be returning to this Hotel and can thoroughly recommend it. Well done the Midland.

I recently stayed at the Midland on business. Firstly, it is a very impressive place. The building is huge, but welcoming and well kept. My room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with good facilities and functioning air conditioning due to the windows being welded shut...

Unfortunately I didn't have time to use the other hotel facilities but am reliably informed by a colleague that the fitness centre is commendable.

The only disappointment was the quality of the service. I note from other reviews that this is usually excellent, so maybe I was just unlucky. I ate in the Wyvern restaurant both nights I was there and found the middle management to be brusque and even a little rude, not least to the serving staff! The food was alright, but nothing to write home about. At checkout, the gentleman at the desk was equally dismissive and curt (I usually make an effort to be friendly, I promise!) and I almost wish I'd used the faceless (if convenient) express checkout by dropping my key in a box.

Breakfast was completely different, and apart from an excellent range of tasty options, the staff were brilliant - very cheerful for so early in the morning, polite and efficient. For such busy people, this was impressive.

Overall though, I don't wish to be disparaging as I was delighted with my stay overall and would definitely visit again.

Dear drjamin,

Many thanks for your kind review and delighted to read that you will be back soon and that you enjoyed your stay with us.

Please be assured that the quality of service that you received at Breakfast is normally what we feel our staff deliver in all of their activities as a norm. To that end I will have a word with the departments concerned where you felt that we could improve to ensure we deliver excellence in all areas at all times.

Thank you once again and we look forward to your return.

Stayed here for a special birthday, the room was quite pricey but totally worth it,the hotel is very splendid and grand. The room was modern and very clean. We ordered room service and was quite surprised at the price which was very reasonable and the food was exceptionally good. Used the pool in the morning and that was lovely. I would recommend anyone to stay here.

I had a 2 night stay at The Midland whilst attending an off site conference. Reception is very spacious and the staff were very friendly and efficient. I had a second floor room to the side of the hotel, road noise wasn't an issue but you are overlooked with only a streets width between you and other hotels. The double room was very spacious, well appointed and clean. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning was effective and almost noiseless. Apart from breakfast, which was more than acceptable I didn't eat in the hotel. My only slight criticism is the lack of onsite car parking, but mindful that this is an older city centre hotel and the number of car parks in the vivcinity it wasn't a problem. Overall a very functional hotel with friendly staff.

Dear jenx2468,

As a seasoned Conference Guest TripAdvisor Reviewer can I thank you for your kind words about the hotel and our team. I believe we overcome the matter of parking by having a car parking valet service available to all guests from the second that they arrive so that all can get on with what's important to them whilst visiting The Midland; be it business or pleasure. We also have one of the largest indoor car parks in the City just 50 metres away (underneath Manchester Central) which may help you when planning your next visit to us.

Thank you once again and we look forward to your return.

Have just spent 2 days at a Seminar in this hotel. The rooms were quite small but very comfortable and functional. The hotel facilities, bar, restaurant, lobby etc were very upmarket and efficient, with staff asking just the right amount of times if anything was needed, without becoming pests. The position of the hotel is superb in terms of being very close to restaurants, nightlife, train station etc. Would use this hotel again.

Dear EssexMiket,

Thank you for taking the time to review The Midland and for your kind comments from the perspective of a business guest. We are extremely fortunate with our location in that it is probably the best situated hotel in Manchester for leisure, business and commerce with easy links in, out and around the City via a number of easy to reach transport alternatives.

However thanks mainly for your comments about our great team, who you've told us, got it just right for you. It is a skill in itself to be helpful without hindering or annoying guests whether they be with us for business or pleasure or both!

We look forward to your return.
