We were recently in the fortunate position of having to choose between The Lowry or The Midland. We chose The Midland primarily because of it's excellent location. The building is a big old lump of Victorian brick, impressive, imperial but not for fans of modern hotels. The room was comfortabe, the bed beautiful and the bathroom spotlessly clean. If I have one minor quibble it was that one corner of the room had a small stain that needed repainting (looked like a water leak) and the windows were fixed shut. I know this is probably in the interests of health and safety but surely if people are worried about their children then put a lock high up on the door, it would still be safe and people could have a choice as to whether they want air conditioning or a 'proper' breeze. This is not something limited to The Midland but wherever I come across it, it gets on my nerves.
After a very pleasant nights sleep we went for breakfast. This was excellent, a wide range of continental, cooked, fresh fruit and beverages. Our waitress, Beverley, was extremely friendly and welcoming, attentive without being intrusive, perfectly helpful. During our stay we encountered several staff and each one left us with the impression that nothing was too much trouble.
The Midland is an older hotel but there's nothing wrong with that. More improtantly, the staff have old fashioned values and this is The Midlands best asset.
