“Historic hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014 via mobile

We stopped at the Midland for 1 night whilst visiting Manchester to catch up with some friends.

We arrived early (a little too early for an early check in!) to be greeted by friendly and professional staff, who were in the process of check out fro the morning guests. As we were so early our bags were placed in storage for us until later in the afternoon.

We returned a couple of hours later, checked in very quickly and made our way up to our room, on the 5th floor, outward facing (some rooms are internal facing). The room was small and compact, with high ceilings and original finishings. What did spoil the decor for me, was the use of chrome switches at eye level, but white plastic where the TV connects to the wall. For me, this was a disappointment for a prestige hotel.

TV came with an extensive selection of programmes in various languages, and the AC was powerful enough to keep the room cool on a moderately warm evening. The bed had separate headboards, with a springy but soft mattress.

We skipped breakfast as at £20 per head for a plated hot breakfast, felt this was too expensive for Central Manchester, which has a variety of options for half the price.

Check out was quick and smooth, and overall a good experience.

Great room (107) but decor a little dated. THe lights flashed off and on all though breakfast which was a little disconcerting and the background music was too loud for breakfast time. My colleague who is a wheelchair user experienced a few small issues, such as the room door spyhole was too high to see out of, and the room door too heavy to negotiate on her own. Bar meal service was excellent, (Pint of San Miguel £4.40 a bit steep) and food tasty. Highly reocmmended. Big comfy bed with lots of pillows.

Room Tip: room 107 has no window or view, just a small strip of glass at 8 foot high to let in a tiny bit of l...

We only stayed the one night, but was very impressed. We made full use of the gym and pool. The room was superb with a nice view over the tops of Manchester out to the hills. Lovely breakfast. Friendly staff. Everything you could wish for.

I rarely leave reviews but I was so disappointed with the Midland that I had to. Don't arrive before 3pm check-in because you will sit in the lobby. We arrived at 2.30pm and were told they would check the room to see if it was ready - nobody did and we were left to join a growing queue. Staff at desk were unhelpful and quite rude. The room was tired looking and the creaking floorboards from the room upstairs kept me awake. In all, a letdown. Also, it was a bit intimidating coming back to the hotel after an evening out to be met by a gang of drunken people smoking on the steps of the hotel.
Suggest you save your money and book elsewhere.

I put a lot of thought into which hotel to choose for a stay over in Manchester. I was on a bit of a budget, but it was a special occasion so it needed to be good. I can't comment on the other 4*'s but this was perfect. It was a standard double but felt like it could have been a superior. Lovely square room (222) with beautiful free standing furniture which really made it feel very exclusive. Although I paid just £125 on Trivago, it really felt like I could have paid far more. We didn't use spa facilities or the restaurant but did return after a late night and enjoyed very late sandwiches in the bar. We were served by Charlotte who was so patient and accommodating dealing with us and other late night revellers with great professionalism and a friendly smile. Full marks to her - she was what encouraged me to write the review. Great hotel, even walking through spacious corridors was a pleasure! We would LOVE to stay again and certainly recommend to anyone!

Have stayed at this hotel a few times and on this last occasion I feel I must comment on the constant high standards that have been maintained. From check in to check out and everything in between, was again a pleasure to experience and be it an event or shopping trip well worth staying here.
