“Worst executive room on record”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

Booked an executive double rather than the standard..... What a joke! To say the nice decor and chandelier in reception lull you into a false sense of security is a serious understatement! Alarm bells first rang when we were told to take the lift to 6th floor, but there were only buttons to 5 floors. All became clear when we eventually found the grotty tight staircase from the back of the 5th floor and struggled up with our suitcases up into the stale air and flickering lights of a tired looking corridor with chipped paintwork and noisy ventilation. On entering the room it looked like something from Faulty Towers with fake rustic furniture and an old TV on such a low stand out of view from the bed that they may as well have put it on the floor. The main problem with the room was the non existent sound separation from the adjacent room or corridor. The clarity with which we could hear the couple next door coughing, whispering, talking and unfortunately fornicating was truly astounding! When they walked across their bedroom our floor moved, and when they 'tested' their bed ours moved along with it!! There were people running and shouting in the corridor slamming doors at all hours and just when it was quiet enough to consider sleeping (4am) the pipes started clanking and the radiator was making a trickling noise right next to the bed. Aside from this the mattress was lumpy with springs that sporadically twanged in your back, there was a ripped hole in the pillow case and the kettle was so slow we could have boiled water quicker blowing it with a hairdryer! The shower suddenly scalded you from time to time and there were only 2 tea bags.... Truly an experience to be missed!!!

i found booking the room over the phone was perfect couldnt fault the customer service of the man that served me.

when we got there it looked very clean and welcoming,, we qued for a few moments as it was busy the time we arrived,, we were appolgised to as we waited but we were just handed our key after there was a very clear lack of communication,, we were not told what floor or where to go like other places ive stayed,, and we were not wished a good stay as we walked away.

we got to our floor and go to the room and we were pleasently surprised at the size of the whole room! we booked a 3 person room and it was more hen big enough for all of us with out feeling cramped.

the facitlies were basic,, old facilites and old tv and electricals.

we called for room service as we needed a few glasses and a bottle opener and we were passed to the bar where no one picked up rand for about 3 mins.
we rang again and said could we have 3 glasses and a bottle opener once again we were passed to the bar NO ANSWER
i then called back a third time when i said weve been passed to the bar theres no anser,,, i was greated with a HUFF! and the ladys voice became fustrated and bored and no enthusasim to want to help.
she said fine ok and put the phone down... they glasses and opener NEVER ARRIVED!!

we found the staff as whole very rude and unwelcoming! when we walked past any we werent greated with a smile or polite hello,, it was just a blank glare and a sour look.

in the morning we wanted to order room service,, the menu says 11am,, recpetion told us 1pm and the resteraunt told us 3pm and then changed it to no we wont be doing it today.

i come from a customer service background and i can 100% say we will not be returning due to the sheer rudeness we recieved.

1 good point the beds are extremley comfy!

The rooms are very dated and the beds a very small, and hard. The hotel is pre Queen Victoria and really needs a make over (HINT). When you have a shower you will flood the Bathroom, the only lights that you have in the room are lamps as the main lights do not work, when you order room service you will be lucky if it arrives.

This hotel is very noisy and it felt like the club was in my room.

I will defo not be staying at this nasty hotel.

Although this hotel is very well situated in the centre of Manchester, close to the buses and trams, I wouldn't recommend it. Obviously grand in its heyday, the hotel is now sad and tired. There are only two small lifts and if you have a room at the top of the hotel you can wait for a very long time. I was staying with my elderly parents who found this quite an issue especially as there was nowhere to sit while you were waiting.

The main issue I had with the hotel though was the noise. On a Friday and Saturday there are two night clubs below the hotel which play extremely loud music until 3am. I was on the 5th floor and it sounded as if the music was coming from right below me. There were many other annoyances - telephones that didn't work, no waste paper bins, a shower that didn't work, poor lighting in the rooms, a non existent wardrobe door - but the over riding issue was the terrible thumping that resonated throughout the building at the weekend.

I stayed in this hotel for one night only because it was close to a pick up point for me joining a foreign coach trip at 6 am. I expected a small single room but the room was in fact a double and clean and comfortable. I booked a meal and wine at a special price. The food was unexciting so that was a disappointment but I was given a whole bottle of wine which I did not expect so that was a bonus! I knew that being in the heart of club land etc that it wasn't going to be quiet but it was far noisier than I expected and although I was getting up anyway at 4 in the morning for my early start, I got no sleep whatsoever for the noise outside of shouting,, traffic, police cars etc.

However, if you are in Manchester for the social life this is an ideal hotel for you but if you are there for a relaxing stay it is not the place for you. For me it was just a convenient stop over and fitted my purpose (except for the lack of sleep).

The hotel is a bit tired but at the same time was pleasant and comfortable in the foyer and bar areas and I felt comfortable as a single woman traveler sitting in the bar area alone.

I would recommend for a city stay but not for a relaxing weekend.

Level of the hotel is the worst I've ever had.
The room on the sixth floor with no elevator and the room had a smell of petrol or any other fuel, sleeping was impossible. Skylight that did not get caught.
The next day, I got a new room which was a disco on the top,
to bed at. 05.00 am when music stop. then the traffic noise began at seven at morning so the weekend ruined.
The staff with the exception of the baggage room caring boys were not suitable for the customer service.

BR. disappointed customer
