Once inside this impressive building you are treated to a different experience of being able to navigate around the outside of the theatre! There are places to eat, drink and shop for different souvenirs of Manchester. A Maxine Peake key ring! Such a lovely pre show atmosphere is always created. The play was Maxine Peake's third play, "Queens of the Coal Age". She had used her experience as an actor to write this version of what actually happened in 1993. Her early days with Victoria Wood surfaced at times. Great place, great actor/writer Maxine Peake. A must if you love theatre and or buildings.

Went to the RET to see Queen's of the Coal age. The building is a stunning venue, very well adapted to performance whilst retaining the original character and atmosphere. The stage area is highly adaptable and allows innovative and original stage directions providing an excellent place for drama. As for the play the cast and crew of this production made good use of the facility and the play was well acted. It told the story of a particular incident in the struggle to save the coal industry effectively but the characters were a bit one dimensional and the dialogue a bit contrived.

Went to see Queens of the Coal age as a birthday treat with family age from 19-70+ . Entered from St Ann’s Square and found the steps very steep. It is a beautiful building and the inside is open and inviting. Coffee bar and alcohol bar surround the theatre performance space. They walk around ringing a bell to warn people to take their seats. We had second row seats entrance 2 stalls. A large man was in front of me and so I moved along to get a better view as there were empty seats. In the second half I moved onto the front row and had a fantastic view . The actors were excellent using the whole space well. The drama was gripping and it was a real ensemble piece even with an understudy who had to read the script. During the interval had a large Sauvignon Blanc which was very good but cost £7 and a coke cost £1.50. There is a shop and there were souvenirs on display but missed them and they were gone at the end . It’s a very comfortable theatre and the production values are high .

Maxine Peake's 'Queens of the Coal Mine'brilliantly played. A treat to see humour used so cleverly as a true story unfolded. The Royal Exchange theatre is run by a charity apparently. It is well run and set inside a beautiful old building. We understand that there are plans to improve the theatre, it is needing updating but still a very enjoyable place to see great performances.
