We went to the Alchemist on a Friday evening after work. We had a reservation for 6.30pm and arrived at the restaurant a few minutes earlier only to be told that we would have to be out by 8pm...the manager didn’t even try to say it nicely. My friend mentioned she wasn’t warned about this when she booked the table, but the manager insisted that they must have explained this to her on the phone. As precious time was ticking away we agreed to disagree and sat at our table at which point I looked around and realised the restaurant wasn’t busy at all. We ordered cocktails which took a while to arrive, starters and mains were average. However, the waitress was in our face all the time, so we couldn’t really hold a conversation for longer than 5 minutes without being interrupted by the waitress asking us if we wanted more wine, more water, more food, etc...she obviously cared more about hitting her targets and selling more than about her customers enjoying a quiet meal. At 8 o’clock we still had half a bottle of wine left, but nevertheless the waitress came with the bill at 8 sharply without us asking for it. There were still a few empty tables at this point so we couldn’t really see why they wanted to rush us, but we felt so unwelcome we just wanted to leave. And then the greatest disappointment – the waitress came with the credit card machine and asked rather arrogantly what tip we wanted to leave on the card. We were going to leave a 10% tip in cash but this put us off completely so I said ‘None please!’. I would never go back to this place again...nor will I be ever going to the Grill on the Alley as it’s run by the same people (though I must say the service has been much better at the Grill on the Alley).

Dear Marconi25,

On behalf of The Alchemist please accept our sincere apologies for the poor service that you received recently.

If a table is required for a second sitting it is The Alchemist's policy to inform all guests of this upon making the initial reservation; whether by phone or in person. Obviously this hasn't happened on this particular occasion and again we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or upset caused.

We will aim to contact you privately through Trip Advisor to discuss the incident further in the hope you will return to The Alchemist and experience our great food and atmosphere as it should be.

Best wishes and kind regards,

The Alchemist Team

A friend and I visited on a Sunday. The restaurant was busy so we had a short wait for a table. The decor is modern, and there is a nice, 'buzzy' atmosphere. There is a large bar area and a long, narrow restaurant area - the tables weren't laid out in the most logical way which meant staff and customers bumping into each other to reach the tables, which was a little irritating. The table we were sat at had chairs that were like slightly lowered bar stools, which were more comfy than I anticipated. The extensive brunch menu contained dishes such as eggs benedict, eggs florentine, full English breakfast, scrambled eggs, fish finger sandwiches, plus 2 choices of traditional Sunday roast, and a number of sandwiches. I had the roast beef dinner (£9.95), which arrived with a pot of gravy, a nice big fluffy Yorskhire pudding and some parsnips. Then there was a separate plate with 3 dishes, containing cauliflower cheese, perfectly-cooked carrots and roast potatoes. The portion was really big, and everything in it was delicious. I then had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream - the ice cream was lovely and creamy, and there was a big pool of sauce which was delicious. A glass of wine was £6.30 - not cheap but seems to be what most decent restaurants charge. There was also a huge, not too badly priced, cocktail menu. The staff were OK, we had to remind them once or twice for certain things but they did apologise for any delays. I'll definitely be going back to sample more of the brunch menu!
