“gay flophouse”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2007

This is a gay hotel in the gay district, frequented by gay men. Nothing in their literature (ie the website) indicates this is the case. Given that check in is in an actual gay bar (and indeed have to fill in the details of your address card at the bar, where it can be viewed by any random drinker) this could be a bit of a problem. I would not have wanted to be checking in with a couple of kids in tow or a wife. Also many of the rooms including the one I stayed in are on the ground floor of a very busy street in the heart of the gay district. The first night I stayed there I didn't get to sleep until 5:30 in the morning because of hordes of drunken dimwits babbling outside my window, only feet away, as well as people running into and out of the building, banging on doors and screaming at each other. At night this whole area is like a vietnam of drunkeness and debauchery. If you are staying in one of the rooms i stayed in you will not get any sleep until the very early hours of the next morning, unless you are so drunk you virtually pass out. DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you're a gay man looking to party, fine. No-one else will want stay here.

Having seen the hotel from outside before I had somewhat low expectations. Upon arrival we found our room (a triple) was in the annex over the road from the main hotel. On the plus side the beds were clean and pretty comfortable and we had our own bathroom (not all rooms do). On the negative side the shower tray was dirty and the towel rail was falling off the wall - being held on with sellotape! The cupboard door handle fell off, the safe was attached to the radiator cover which was itself not fixed to anything. And the tea set had a cup with an enormous chip out of it - how this could have been cleaned and put back I do not know! Overall it was a bit like staying in pretty bad student accommodation. It was only £55/night for the triple, but I think some minor improvements could be made which wouldn't cost a lot but would ensure a moree pleasant stay. I don't think I'll be staying at the Rem again!

Accommodation was sub-standard, past tired, dirty, approaching dilapidated. complaints are heard but staff are practised in placating guests and nothing is done to correct matters. We have stayed several times as the place can't be beaten for location but our last visit will definitely be the last.

Faults with our en-suite double include:
Room not properly serviced over three days.
Filthy carpet.
Tired bed linen, curtains, towels.
Broken bed-side table.
Broken chest of drawers.
A wall light bulb out.
Storage heater cover loose from wall.
No source of heat available in room.
Safe in room not working.
Television not working.
Area of ceiling damaged due to water ingress from above, still dripping when shower running in room above.
Cup and saucer on hospitality tray not clean on arrival.
Many ceramic floor tiles in bathroom loose.
Bathroom extractor not working.
Wash basin cracked.
Shower area badly repaired and covered in black mould.
Bathroom stinking badly due to musty shower curtain and damp.

We arrived at the hotel about 21:30 on a Friday night. We checked in with relative ease and quickness and were led to the room in the annex. The room was a fair size having a double bed, and a single, a table and 2 chairs accompanied by a dresser with the usual tv and kettle etc.
The location of the place i great, two steps from everywhere in the village. The staff were friendly and helpful, came promptly when we reported the tv not working.
The only negative aspect was the condition of the shower, which was nowhere near as bad as I've seen in The Queens / International.
The bed was great, a v thick mattress, so much that I missed the cooked breakfast, which my boyfriend stated was decent.
All in all, we were quietly impressed enough to book the hotel again for an up and coming visit.

When I checked in I was taken to a small romm in an annex of the hotel that was filthy, used sheets on the bed and dirty towels. The toilet and shower were also filthy. When I complained to the manager I was told there was nothing they could do as they were too busy serving customers in the bar, this was approx 10pm on a Saturday eve.
As a result I moved out immediatly to another hotel.
This hotel is a disgrace to Manchester and the attitute of the staff was nothing short of surley
