“DIRE!”
Reviewed 15 March 2010

We stayed at the Sandown March 2010. We got a shock when we turned up and we're a little concerned as the area that the hotel is situated in is quite rough and this is evident by all the bars on the windows. Although the price was relatively cheap for a 3 bed room, I feel the standard of cleanliness was lacking. When you first walk into the hotel you are hit with the smell of dirty chip fat and this continues in to the rooms and even the towels in the bathroom smell of it. The bathroom was filthy the tiles were full of mould and the floor was that dirty it left your feet black after walking on it. The shower head was broke which resulted in it coming off the bracket and spraying every bit of wall and ceiling in the bathroom. As for the rooms, it's 2days after my stay there and my back is still trying to recover from sleeping in the extremely cheap beds in the room. The walls are that thin in the rooms you could hear every conversation that was going on in the next two rooms and also in the canteen area were the rest of the guests and staff were eating breakfast and breakfast started at 7.30am so no chance of sleeping any later than this. Would I stay there again? I think you can guess the answer. Definitely Not!

I booked this hotel online for my friends & family (18 of us all together). I knew it would be a taxi ride away from the City centre but i never expected to have to google the postcode for the taxi driver.. As soon as we arrived I understood why, i actually said, Hotel instead of halfway house... I know i got it cheap at £20 pppn inc breakfast, but even that seemed expensive once we arrived at the halfway house. I was that concerned for the rest of the group, (who were not arriving till the next day) i tried to find another hotel for them, as i didn't want them staying in such a place! (NO SUCH LUCK). On Saturday afternoon we arrived back to the front door being locked, a heavily pregnant girl and friends were banging on the door, demanding to be let in.. the receptionist came out, let me and my guests in and said, look 'paying guests shouldn't have to put up with this' hence me thinking 'halfway house'! This was nothing compared to what happened during the night.. another large group (girls) had came back from a night out with some extra guests, we arrived back to the night manager screaming at the ones not staying to leave. we went straight to our room and locked the door, just in time for World War 3 to kick off! Some of my guests were arriving back to the sight of girls screaming, half naked lads running round swinging BASEBALL BATS,(these were the non paying guests from earlier) people headbutting walls. An absolute NIGHTMARE! this carried on till about 7 in the morning.. we went for breakfast to be told by the 'cook' its 5 to [--] 10, we have bacon but no [--] bread left. NICE. This was after the other girls had decided to smash up the breakfast room. Oh and we couldn't leave as they had locked the gates and wasn't opening them till the girls had paid for the damage to the rooms. This was the point the hotel management thought to ring the Police. This is only half of what happened in this Hotel! Please do not book here, no matter what price and extras they offer you. It's simply not worth it.

We booked this hotel online for a nights stay as we were attending a tv show at manchester with davina mccall, at first view online it looked nice and cosy and cost £55 for a triple room with a double and 2 single beds and we were not dissapointed when we arrived, although first view of the black bars at the windows, we understood why these precautions were implemented, however this did not spoil our experience, in fact it boosted our experience of the life in Manchester and we felt extremely safe and at home with the owners and the guests.
This hotel gives you easy transport to the city center as well as the town center of rochdale however we did get lost a couple of times due to road works diverting traffic, also with Manchester been a big city and dark at night made it that little bit harder to find our way back.
The room was lovely, did not expect the quality standard and was very neat and tidy, the bathroom was lovely and clean and the room as a whole was warm and welcoming, the only criticism i would have is the traffic from our room, however we did sleep through it and you would expect that been in Manchester.
On the morning we went down to breakfast about 7am and was really looked after, we had our breakfast brought to us and was cooked single handedly by the owner himself and i would like to compliment him as the food was superb and he was a hard working, pleasant and polite man.
If you want to experience manchester and you want to meet decent folk from manchester then this hotel is the place to be and this is highly recommended for the life and experience of a mancunian and manchester lifestyle.

Well done guys :)

Was a bit worried about going to this Hotel as the reviews on Trip Advisor were really bad!!!
Our room looked like it had been recentley refurbished and it was clean so no complaints there.
We booked this hotel because it was close to the event we were going to and just wanted somewhere to get our heads down for a bit before the big drive home, so it was great for we needed.
We had a room with 4 single beds in it (room 16) and paid only £100, we skipped breakfast so not sure what that was like.
I would stay here again.

After viewing the hotels website, I decided to book a room for 4 friends & myself as it was a friends birthday and we were planning a girls night out in Manchester.

After a phone call to reception I made a reservation for Saturday 6th Sept, s a room was available which slept 5 and at the cost of £80.
I was told this was a short taxi ride into the town centre & would be no more than £5 or 6 at the most which seemed reasonable.

We arrived at the hotel at around 3pm and was told by the receptionist that someone was on thier way to collect us and show us to the apartments.

He arrived and advised us to follow him in our car as these were a short drive from the hotel.

We drove another 4 blocks up Rochdale Rd and turned on to a street named Beech Mount, Harpurhey.
This is a very deprived area of Manchester, and we immediatley feared for the safety of our belongings, vehicle and our own well being!

We pulled up outside the premises, which was a guest house in very poor condition. The front door was secured by a code lock system but no other locking systems were in place,

We were then showed to our room. Which was on the top floor.
The door was secured by a yale lock which had clearly been forced previously, to say the rooms were in a poor condition is an understatement, the carpets were stained and filthy, the walls were damp, the tea & coffee making facilities consisted of a chipped, spoutless tea pot, there was no light bulb in one room. Although there were 2 bathrooms, there was no hot water in one!

In a second room was a cooker, at the side of a bed? Which seemed to be a fire hazard in my opinion.

The bed sheets & towels provided were clean, but the towels were used to line the carpet. We only removed our shoes to take a shower.

We all reluctantly agreed to sleep in one room for safety, which led to a very uncomfortable night.

The taxi ride cost £12 into town, this coupled with cost of the return journey, meant staying in a inner city travel lodge would have been the cheaper option.

We were all very disappointed and felt deceived by the hotels website. We will not be returning.

My partner & I booked this accomodation a to cheer up a dreary weekend. We found it on offer on the internet & decided to take a chance as it suited our price range. It was easy to get to and there is a large enclosed car park outside the front door. We checked in at 11am as our room was ready & was pleasantly surprised at the newly refurbished room. Everything was spotless and newly painted. The shower & bathroom was massive and hot water aplenty. The bus route is on the main road outside the hotel & its worth buying a day pass for about £3.75 (but beware it runs out at midnight so you need to buy another if returning late) The buses run till about 3 in the morning and after enjoying a night round Manchester we found our way home easily and safely. The cooked breakfast hit the spot in the morning & you could ask for more toast, tea etc . All the staff were friendly but a special mention to Mike who made us feel more than welcome (and fed us so much we couldnt move!) All in all, a clean, cheap & cheerful place to stay after a shopping, touring or gigging night in Manchester. We will definatly be staying there again.
