“Cheap and Cheerful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2007

I recently stayed at Harpers for one night with a group of lads after coming up to Manchester to watch football. The hotel was still being refurbished when we stayed but our room was decent, although one of the windows was cracked and the shower was difficult to get the temperature right. On a more positive note, the hotel does offer off street parking.

Our rooms were clean and the hotel was fantastic value considering the rooms cost us £90 for a room that sleeps 5 and £50 for a room that sleeps 3. This included a full English breakfast which was up to London café standards! This worked out around £18 each for one night and breakfast, so very cheap.

The staff were very helpful and friendly, and considering our drunkenness after our night out, very patient with our behaviour!

Please note, the pictures I attach were taken on vacating the room.

Essentially you pay for what you get; and if you just want a bed to sleep in, very little damage to your wallet, considerate staff and a full English breakfast I don’t think you can argue with the value.

  • Liked — The Price and Breakfast
  • Disliked — The shower that was either too hot or too cold!

Everything about our stay in this hotel was horrendous. We were aware that there was refurbishment going on so weren't expecting the place to be perfect; the previous review said that her room was newly decorated and very clean - I'm not sure if they only bother cleaning the ones they've finished renovating - I would have been happy with a clean room even if it needed a bit of updating, however there was no excuse for the state of our room: it smelled terrible, the bathroom floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks (you could REALLY tell, especially around the toilet), the sheets couldn't have been ironed - or they had been slept on before!! The lock for the room was just one of those ones where you turn a little button in the middle - like a bathroom door lock. We would have been woken at 1am by the doorbell (which played a little tune for what seemed like eternity), had we not already been lying awake gingerly trying to avoid skin contact with the bed covers desperately praying for at least a couple of hours of sleep so that we could get up and drive home safely.
The walls were so thin that we could hear every word the people next door said - right up until 2am. Then we got to hear everyone arriving for breakfast right beside us from 7.30 onwards.
The whole experience was a total nightmare, I would absolutely recommend paying out the extra £30-£40 it would cost to go elsewhere.

  • Liked — we were only there for one night

Although, in their defence, the Hotel was undergoing refurbishment during my visit, I actually felt unsafe within my room at night and felt the need to baracade myself in with the tea trolly.
The room was clean, if very basic, and had been recently decorated although the door lock seemed inadequate.
The best of the local resteraunts was McDonnalds although the Kebab shop came a close second.

Not recommended for the single girl.

  • Liked — The actual room was clean although very basic and, for this trip, was selected purly on location.
  • Disliked — The feeling of insecurity, main door locked at 9 PM and permanant 'bouncer?' present.
