Owner description: This neo-Gothic masterpiece was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1887. At the front main entrance sits a statue of the Roman Governor, Agricola, founder of the original fort of Mamuciam, from which the city began. The building dominates Albert Square.

Over the years I have gazed in wonder at this architectural marvel....from the outside.

I have only been inside a handful of times but on those occasions have gazed in wonder at the inside, too.

We saw the Clock Tower Tours advertised and jumped at the chance to see the City Centre and the surrounding districts from above.

The history of the Tower and the various features were pretty interesting but paled into insignificance once we walked out on to the balcony. Magnifico!

(Quite why people have thought it appropriate the give the building itself a poor review on here because of the price of beer etc at the Christmas markets which are outside, I've no idea).

Some good stalls and good drinks but unfortunately a little overpriced in my opinion. The range of things to buy is nice but there was a large queue to get in to the bars and once you were in large queues for drinks. There were also inadequate toilet facilities near to the market with massive queues and many visitors opting to use the nearby alleyways to relieve themselves.

A very imposing building which impressed our American granddaughter. Visited between Christmas and New Year so not a lot available to see inside.

Well worth a visit because it is a really beautiful building. Not all parts were open when we went because of a function so will go back.

I was really looking forward to seeing the Christmas Markets with my friends, but it was a huge disappointment. The markets near Next aren't too bad, but if you go up to the Town Hall, it's a joke. People crammed together, you just cannot move. Throw in people taking prams and young children and it's a nightmare. We didn't get to see any of the stalls as it was so busy. The most important thing that I couldn't help but notice is the amount of litter strewn across the streets, the bins are not getting emptied anywhere and people are leaving their leftovers all over the place. It's disgusting. A huge city like Manchester with the most amazing shops has been completely let down because the Council are not doing enough to sort this problem out. If you are going to put these markets on clean the place up and make it more attractive.Make each stall holder responsible for providing and emptying their own bins. God only knows what out of towners think of it. Sorry, but we will definitely not be returning.
