“What a gem”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Visited by accident, we were amazed at this victorian gothic gem. The architecture is wonderful, the mural ceiling spectacular. We asked for a pass to visit the upstairs, this was free and allowed us to see the bee mosaic which gave Manchester it's symbol.

We dropped into Manchester Town Hall, having read previous reviews. It is an incredible building! We had afternoon tea there as well, which was excellent. You really must go there!

“The finest Gothic Revival building in the world? Probably...”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

My wife and I visited Manchester again recently and stopped off for coffee/tea in the glorious setting of the Sculpture Hall Café. We hadn’t been to this magnificent Town Hall since visiting the stupendous Ford Madox Brown exhibition some time ago in the neighbouring Art Gallery and my wife commented that I hadn’t yet shared my images of that visit so I do so now. The Town Hall is one of the glories of the Victorian era and its superb Gothic Revival design reflects the best that Manchester was able to buy in terms of the architect, Alfred Waterhouse. The very finest designers and artisans were employed to carve and sculpt wood and stone as well as producing the wonderful stained glass and ceiling paintings – never mind the set of astonishing masterpiece of the twelve Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown. Manchester’s own website is very comprehensive but if you do want to visit you should check on whether the tours are available as these depend on many events which take place in the building. Whilst the vast space of the Great Hall takes the breath away, it is some of the smaller spaces such as the spiral staircases with the highly ornamented carving and marble pillars which exude quality. Would that my adopted city of Leicester had been more bold in the C19th. Apologies for the quality of the photos but go yourself and take better pictures. You will not be disappointed. Either way the Sculpture Hall Café is a unique experience in its own right so drop in as we did...

Always a great backdrop for the multitude of events that take place around the town hall. It provides a great photo scene to add to all occasions and is usually coupled with a great day out.
