“Not satisfied”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2013

On the whole, the Little Northern Hotel was a disappointing experience. We were given a double room on the first floor right above the pub. As other travelers mentioned, the pub is very, very loud (think of inebriated senior locals wailing off-key karaoke from 4 p.m. until late). The noise from downstairs was unbearable as walls and floors are paper-thin.

The room as such was - to say the least – no frills. No shelf, no wardrobe, no bedside table, no reading light, no towel rack in the ensuite bathroom. In the shower you’ll find the usual haphazard water heater. Everything was clean though.

Staff was friendly but not overly helpful and far from professional. Upon our request to move to another room on the 2nd floor we were at first assured that it wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, we were given ambiguous information by different staff members and we had to stay two more nights in the 1st floor room before we could actually move. The noise on the 2nd floor is less than on the 1st, but so is Wi-Fi reception.

Breakfast is nothing to write home about – sloppy fry-up with soggy toast.

Overall, the atmosphere is rather impersonal and indifferent and the room rental merely seems to be the financial backbone of the pub business. Definitely no place for a relaxing get-away and not really suited for couples. Given the inconveniences we experienced, the price of 50 £ doesn’t seem like such a bargain anymore. Consider spending 20 to 30 quid more and staying e.g. at one of the IBIS or Premier Inn establishments across town which have decent rooms with all necessary amenities.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 2nd floor if you want to get some sleep.

Just got home from a shopping trip in Manchester staying at this hotel. This hotel is basic but serves its purpose well if your looking for a simple room to stay in. The hotel is very central with only a few minutes walk to Arndale centre and Picadilly square. Shopping is basically on its door step! The staff are very helpful and do their best to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible 24 hours a day! The hotel has a separate entrance to the pub and their is an NCP car park right across the road. This car park is quite expensive...GBP13 for a 4 hour stay and 15 for 24 hours. You can park outside on the street for free between 7pm and 7am but out of these ours the parking is of a maximum of 2 hours and is GBP5.40. A few blocks up you will find a yard parking which is much cheaper and only some few mins walk away...GBP8 for 24 hours! The room was airy and clean. No toiletries are supplied and towels are not changed (for a 2 night stay) and the room was not serviced but this is acceptable considering the bargain price we paid. The pub down stairs is very busy but it did not bother us at all as we could not hear a thing from our room on the second floor. The bed is very comfy and the room is cosy...we did not even need to use the heaters provided. The hotel does not have a lift but if you have things like a stroller etc the staff are happy to let you leave it in their room down stairs which is kept locked and you can access it any time. The hot water and bathroom are great...small in size but serves its purpose! Well done to all the staff and will definitely stay here on our next shopping trip!

Stayed here on a Friday night, was going to a concert at MEN. Good location as was near, was put on the first floor in a tiny room with two beds the room was absolutely freezing! The radiators obviously did not work that's why their was an electric heater. Tried that and that did not even work! It was so cold through the night, found it warmer on the corridor! The shower was rubbish trickled out went from freezing to red hot, the bathroom smelt aswell. Over all I found this place discusting, not clean and freezing will not be returning!

Second time I've stayed here and think it's great!

Stayed for one night on my own just while visiting the city. Booked a single room for £35 - got there and was given a double room with a recently done up ensuite shower room.

It's not a classy place - no hairdryer, ironing board, etc but the bed's are so comfy and it's got everything you need including tea / coffee facilities, clothes hangers, tv, towels and soap.

Stayed on the 2nd floor and it was pretty quiet. Usual city noises from outside, but couldn't hear any noise from the pub downstairs. Only problem I had was I couldn't get a signal on the free Wi-Fi - guessing because of being on the top floor?

Stayed here before when in Manchester for a concert and it's a great location, right in the centre of town near the bars, shops, and 5 mins walk from either Victoria or Piccadilly train stations.

As long as you're happy with something simple, you can't go wrong.

Room Tip: The top floors are quieter as you can't hear noise from the pub below.

I stayed here on Saturday night and it was OK.

For £35 I wasn't expecting much but it was clean and the owner was friendly.

As it was the Superleague final hotel prices in Manchester were greatly increased and so this was a bargain.

As regards the pub it was a down to earth old fashioned Manchester pub.I had a couple of drinks there after midnight and apart from the obnoxious bouncer it was OK.

We stayed here for the recent morrissey concert and throughly enjoyed our stay and slept fine possibly as we were at the back of the Millstone. we didnt get chance to stay in the bar for a drink downstairs but it was very busy and lively with live music on at the time. There are also some great bars and cafes in the northern quarter so it is a buzzing area on a weekend, We enjoyed our stay in the Inn / Hotel and the bed was comfortable and for the price we paid the room was fine.

First of all the Little Northern hotel is just a few rooms over the Millstone Pub. This is a place with character, it is a very friendly, very crowded, very noisy pub with music going on to 2 or even 3 in the morning. The staff are very friendly, but the rooms are quite small. Our room, a twin, had a double bed and a single, a kettle with tea/coffee makings and an en-suite shower-room/toilet. There was not space for any clothes storage other than a couple of hangers to hang over the radiator.

Two tips for staying there: ask for an en-suite room - otherwise your private bath is located down the corridor; ask for a room on the 2nd floor - our room was actually quite quiet given the noise in the pub. I imagine a 1st floor room would be pretty noisy being right above the music.

If you are looking for a "Holiday Inn" type accommodation this isn't for you, but if you want a very friendly, lively place conveniently placed then it is worth considering.

Room Tip: As noted above, ask for an en-suite room on the 2nd floor
