On the whole, the Little Northern Hotel was a disappointing experience. We were given a double room on the first floor right above the pub. As other travelers mentioned, the pub is very, very loud (think of inebriated senior locals wailing off-key karaoke from 4 p.m. until late). The noise from downstairs was unbearable as walls and floors are paper-thin.
The room as such was - to say the least – no frills. No shelf, no wardrobe, no bedside table, no reading light, no towel rack in the ensuite bathroom. In the shower you’ll find the usual haphazard water heater. Everything was clean though.
Staff was friendly but not overly helpful and far from professional. Upon our request to move to another room on the 2nd floor we were at first assured that it wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, we were given ambiguous information by different staff members and we had to stay two more nights in the 1st floor room before we could actually move. The noise on the 2nd floor is less than on the 1st, but so is Wi-Fi reception.
Breakfast is nothing to write home about – sloppy fry-up with soggy toast.
Overall, the atmosphere is rather impersonal and indifferent and the room rental merely seems to be the financial backbone of the pub business. Definitely no place for a relaxing get-away and not really suited for couples. Given the inconveniences we experienced, the price of 50 £ doesn’t seem like such a bargain anymore. Consider spending 20 to 30 quid more and staying e.g. at one of the IBIS or Premier Inn establishments across town which have decent rooms with all necessary amenities.
