“Staff attitude dreadful, noise unbearable - should have shut for refurb”
Reviewed 3 August 2011

Stayed here on a business trip, and booked through company scheme. Someone who appeared to be the Assistant Manager at the front desk became quite irritated when I told him breakfast was included, and continued to argue with me over it even when he had my booking contract in his hand confirming this. He called the travel operator, and came back to tell me he 'would do it this time' - I wasn't going to settle for anything less as I had a contract and he clearly had an issue with the booking agents not me! However, I wonder if this made him give me a room on the 1st floor directly above the bench saws and drills for the refurb? I nice touch after a 5 hour drive, and then 4 hours in the office. I asked what time the noise started in the morning and was assured it wouldn't start until 11. Hey presto, halfway through my 9;30 call the next day - the noise starts. I went to my colleagues room to continue - and we could hear it quite clearly on the 4th floor. I haven't even gone into the dust everywhere, the floors covered in plastic, and builders leering in the bar. Disgusted with the hotel's attitude to their clients and would recommend it to no-one, if I'd have had young children here I'd have been besides myself.

Good points: very well located for central Manchester, easy to find, with parking (discounted) next door. Relatively quiet at night for a Saturday. Stylish lobby area, and helpful reception staff.
We asked to change the first room we were allocated because it smelled of smoke (although all the rooms are meant to be non-smoking, so this may have been a one-off). A member of the reception staff immediately met us on our floor and took us to another room, which was bigger, with more facilities and with no smell of smoke. That was great service I felt. Loved the iphone speakers, the expresso machine and the thoughtful jug of milk in the fridge + water bottles too.

Negative points: We ordered a newspaper which was not delivered, or someone else took it. The receptionist took it off the bill, but didn't offer to replace it. There is a fixed price buffet breakfast in the lobby cafe at £13.95 per person which we thought was high, and offered no flexibility. However Don Giovanni's very friendly deli round the corner on Oxford Road does a great full English ,breakfast cooked to order at £4.40 plus coffee, wiith other choices too.

the rooms are fine, no nasty surpirzes, although mine was a bit noisy - I think I was above/beside a boiler or main pipes or something. The location was fantastic! couldn't really have asked for better, really central.

We were in Manchester for my wife's graduation. we arrived at the hotel too early to check in, but they looked after our bags and took all our details. Check-in when we came back was smooth, bu tthe first room we were shown to stank of cigarettes (despite this being a non-smoking hotel). A quick call to Reception brought a front-office team member up to our floor with a key card for a new room - which turned out to be an upgrade: no fuss - a situation dealt with well. The bed was large and comfortable, the two reclining TV chairs were quirky and the in-room coffee maker was very useful. The midday check-out process on Sunday was equally smooth. Downsides? Continental breakfast at £13.95 was a no-no. Take a tip. Walk out onto Oxford Street and try Giovanni's for breakfast - under £5 for a full English!

I used some left-over airmiles from a frequent flyer scheme I no longer benefit from to get a one-night B&B voucher for an Accor hotel. Manchester on a Monday night was the best vacancy I could find! That said, the hotel, and the room, did not disappoint, and we would certainly go back. The place is relatively new, well-designed, very central and - at least on a Monday - quiet. That said, it has seen a lot of use, and there were little things we noticed in the room like a cigarette burn on the bedroom sofa, bath and basin plugs that were not fully functional, and coat-hangers that came apart under the weight of a jacket or trousers! So, it could do with a little attention to details and some minor maintenance. We had a good night's sleep, breakfast was pretty good, and the staff were pleasant and seemed well-trained. The room was stylish and well-equipped (iron and ironing board as well as TV and computer keyboard, for example).
All in all, we liked it well enough to think about a return visit.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the central courtyard and Ibis hotel - not a great view, but quiet.

I stayed in Manchester for few days to explore the city and it surroundings (including York, Chester, Liverpool as well) and was happy with the hotel.

The hotel is nicely situated. Not in the immediate centre of the town, but it is 5-10 minutes walk to the centre.

It is a typical Novotel. So typical, that it hardly provides you with any surprises. I had a relatively spacious room, window to the inner court of the hotel, which was nice, as I had requested a quiet room. Safety deposit box was not working, but housekeeping came to fix it (new battery) in 5-10 minutes after I had contacted them. Great service.

The room was always clean. The toiletries were filled. The reception was helpful in getting me the guidance of the town. What annoyed me however was the fact that even though the hotel was nothing but full, no one seemed to get their room (or even not a chance to do a check in process without getting the room keys) prior to 2 p.m. That meant then that at 2 p.m there was a very long queue at the reception when lots of people were waiting to check in, get their luggage from the storage room, listen to the explanation of the advantages of Accor card (me too, even though I has already started the check in process by presenting my card - by the end of the check in process the receptionist had already forgotten that I already had a card. Smile).

Breakfast was OK, I used Internet couple of times in the Internet corner and I never had to queue for the computer. Maybe as I woke up early.

I had the early flight on the morning I left the hotel, thus the reception had booked me a taxi a night before. When I came to the lobby, I realized it was full of people waiting for the taxi (without booking) and it was a kind of mess and the employee of the hotel just pushed people to the taxis from kind of queue outdoors and told me to wait inside. My taxi driver told me later on our way to the airport that the clients had already been pushed for his car from the queue, but he had insisted that he will not take anyone from the queue, that he has a reservation to take a person from room xxx to the airport. The hotel employee did not care. Finally the taxi driver came to the lobby by himself to pick me up. Thank you very much for him.

Would I return to this hotel? Yes, I would.
