Andrew, our guide, is a retired history professor with exceptionally strong knowledge of Manchester and a passion for history. We learned so much more than we would have had we walked around on our own. The walk was customized for our interests (and took place in the evening after work) and was very well designed and paced. Andrew patiently and articulately answered our questions (and he knew all the answers) and we engaged in interesting conversation throughout our walk. In just over two hours, we walked by and heard stories about the Football museum, town hall, Albert Square, the Rylands Library, the Midland Hotel where Rolls met Royce, Free Trade Hall, Royal Exchange Hall, Manchester Cathedral and the Arena (where the terrorist bombing took place), Chinatown and the streets of traditional cotton warehouses, the site of the original Roman fort. We then took a tram to Media City and walked around the ship canal area, before walking to Old Trafford and then taking the tram back to the city centre.
This was a terrific walk and is strongly recommended to anyone who wants to understand more about Manchester and the surrounding areas.
