“So disappointed. Felt ashamed to be British!”
Reviewed 2 August 2009

The dirtiest, smelliest, cheapest place EVER!!!!
Don't go!!!!
Our so called 'Executive' room stank of stale tobacco.
The bedding was cheap and grubby. The windows were filthy.
The bathroom was basic, with cracked tiles.
The reception was dirty, with worn out carpets .....and staff!!

I had not read Trip Advisor reviews when my travel agent suggested Britannia as an option before a flight back to Australia. So I was surprised at how old and tired the hotel is. The rooms were adequate and clean enough but not spotless. The water was hot and there was plenty of it. So there were some pluses. However it was not possible to open the windows and there was no sign of any air conditioning. So the room was stuffy and we did not want to spend any longer in than we had to.

There is nowhere else to eat anyway around- so we had no option but to use the restaurant having handed our hire car in earlier. The staff were very nice and the food tolerable- no more!

We did not realise how the hotel was from the airport- we should have checked- and yes, the shuttle does go "around the houses" and takes 45 mins to a 10 minute trip. Also there is now a notice saying shuttle costs - 4 pounds per person ( a taxi for 2 is only 9 pounds!). However as we booked before 31 March 2009 we were not charged.

The desk staff were efficient- but hardly friendly. The bar area has TV going non stop- more like a poor quality pub than a hotel. We paid $1AUD140.00. I know this is the UK but this hardly seemed like value for money. We normally stay in B&Bs and get so much more for our money! Next time I fly out of Manchester I will stay somewhere else or try not to have stay overnight before a flight.

we used this hotel for parking while going on holiday for 2 weeks booked through Superbreak. never again. the hotel was filthy and run down. the staff couldn't have been more UNhelpfull if they tried. the sheets were grubby and so was the tatty old blanket on the bed. the mattress was so uncomfortable i was awake most of the night. parking was not secure. when we arrived it looked like someone had thrown a dirty nappy out of the window it was still there when we returned 2 weeks later. the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. i am just thankfull we didnt eat there.

Me and my friends booked this last minute to stay over for a concert a twin room was just £ 40. After the booking was made we read the reviews on sites like this and we were very worried as some of them painted a very bad picture. The staff were friendly and helpful the rooms were clean and basic the décor wasn't brand new but there were no major flaws to complain about. My car was fine in the spacious outdoor car park and we were not offered a plastic sign to put in the window as some have mentioned. The room was quiet (we were on the 5th floor) and we were not disturbed the noise of the traffic outside was fairly loud but did not disturb us and as the hotel is on a main road it's to be expected. The lifts worked find too. We did not eat or drink in the hotel but there seemed to be a number of people in the bar and resturaunt. I would stay again as it was cheap and cheerful and in a good location for reaching the cricket club.

The best thing by far was that this particular booking I made represented excellent value for money. The hotel had the most essential attributes; a clean room and toilet, sufficient towels and shampoo/soap and the bed was confortable. There was coffee/tea making facilities and not much else to the room, but I did not need anything else. The staff were polite and efficient towards any question asked, but were not proactive. They were often absent from the front desk, but would appear fairly quickly once you stood there waiting for them. The meal menu was adequate if far from spectacular.

Granted this is a review from 2 1/2 years ago but this place was so awful we'll never be going back and have told all our friends not to stay there!
To tell you everything that went wrong would take ages, but to cut a long story short the whole experience was a very unpleasant one!
Check in was quite quick but when we got to our room we found a used condom in the bin and screwed up used tissues in the draw next to the bed. This was really disgusting and had we had children with us we would've marched straight to reception to complain, but we held back because the rooms and parking are very cheap and we didnt expect a great deal as a result. But when we went to pull the duvet back we found it had a rip in it which went the full length of the duvet to the point where it was actually falling out of its cover. To me this is just plain terrible housekeeping as there was no way this wouldnt have been noticed when putting the sheets on the bed.
We went straight to reception who offered us another room. Unfortunately this room was still very poor (dirty and the toilet hadn't been flushed...it was really not nice!). But choosing the easy way out we decided to just put up and shut up for the sake of a relaxing start to our holiday.
Foolishly we then decided to use their restaurant for dinner, The 'carvery' was bone dry and there was no desert left. Three times the chef came out from the kitchen swearing at someone behind every time, helping himself with his fingers to the dry as a bone food that was there. We complained that we'd just paid a fair amount expecting nice food, but we ended up eating hardly any. The boy and girl 'waiting on' were clearly untrained and handled our request badly, not knowing what to do or how to give a refund. We got half our money back which again we thought was poor.
Normally we would laugh this kind of thing off but we'd had a long day travelling there and we were both really tired. It really was like Fawlty Towers! But in the end we'd had enough and complained again this time to the duty manager. She took on board our comments and offered us a free stay (by a certain date) at another Britannia Hotel. Unfortunately by the time we were able to use this offer, it had expired so no joy there then.
We did brave the Britannia Country House Hotel the year after as it had the parking offer too, but this was just as bad and we havent stayed with Britannia since.
On the plus side parking was fine and we got to the airport on time without a problem.
I definately wouldnt recommend this hotel to a friend, I'd tell them to stay away!

A pretty old and tired hotel. However offered a fantastic price of £49 for a room plus 8 days parking which is not to be sniffed at.

1 bottle of wine was included with the room (not up to much but ok for a wee drink night before departure - this was only available through certain websites when booking) The lounge/bar area is pretty drab and every time the automatic doors open the cold air rushes in.

Rooms have obviously had a little bit of modernising but if you like a nice hotel - avoid this one - if you are not fussy for one night and the price is right - its fine.

I wouldnt stay again - unless it was for the parking.
