As a regular guest in the Hilton Deansgate decided to take a work colleague for a beer here to see what it was like. I'm used to the view as I usually get a room on the higher floors, so wasn't here for that - more to see what the fuss is about.
Now, I was not prepared for the pretentiousness of it all - from queuing to get on the elevator - 15minutes (and when we got up to the bar it was half full) to the table seating and the over priced beer. I didn't feel the staff were that welcoming (compared to the rest of the Hilton staff who are fantastic).
It looks like the whole 'exclusive' feel is manufactured to make it feel exclusive - I guess some people fawn over having to put their names on lists, stepping into Willi Wonka's elevator and feeling like they are the chosen ones, but I just want to have a beer in a nice location - I don't want to have to faff around to get in - nor be made to feel grateful I was allowed in!!
Oh and the acoustics are awful so difficult to have a conversation which makes the atmosphere
