“Worst service ever experienced”
Reviewed 9 July 2013

I was told this was a great "local" pub in the heart of manchester that did great ales. The selection of beers was standard and the real ales were poorly poured. I could have forgiven this pub these shortcomings had it not been for the terrible service by the bar staff - slow, impolite and aggressive when confronted that i had been waiting longer than other people who had just walked in off the street.
Based on this experience i'd rather spend my money in an overpriced hotel that give this joke of a pub anymore custom

“Giving it 3. But overrated.”
Reviewed 4 July 2013 via mobile

Don't understand the fuss. £3.70 for pint carling. Bitter was £3.50. Was that the landlord who came outside and got on his motorcycle just to rev it up and nearly choke us all to death with its fumes. For 10 long minutes. We left as did two other parties. None impressed.all sharing looks of disgust. Went pev. Much better. Toilets in protection stunk. Filthy. Not at all impressed. Very lucky to get 3. Shud have been 2. Not for me thanks.

“The Best Pub in Manchester”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

My boyfriend doesn't drink ale so we do not go in here very often, which is a real shame. I absolutely adore this place. I remember going here after a job interview (which was a success, I may add) and having the most wonderful Grunt, Gobble, Zoom and Coo pie. Yum. The pies are served with lots of new potatoes and veg and thick gravy and cost little more than a fiver. The ale is well kept and tasty, and if you like whiskey then they have a menu about ten pages long. Whether its a nightcap after an evening at the Bridgewater Hall or a catch up with chums, the Brit is brilliant. Also, it is a proper drinkers pub with a cosy, homely atmosphere so you wont be assailed by small kids running around the place. Heaven!

“Brilliant pub”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

An fine iconic Manchester pub. Excellent cloice of real ales, and of course the legendary enormous choice of whiskeys. Plenty of history here including murals on the walls. A must visit for any visitor to the finest city in Britain.

“Down to earth but a bit pricy”
Reviewed 21 April 2013

With so many pretentious bars in Manchester, it’s reassuring to know that the Britons Protection provides a much-needed down-to-earth alternative.

With an extensive range of beers and excellent staff, this pub should be on any real ale buff’s itinerary around Manchester.

For anyone interested in Manchester’s history, this bar is well worth visiting. It’s over 200 years old and has a picture of the Peterloo massacre among other historical artefacts.

As for the ale itself, we had Beartown brewed by the Beartown brewery in Congleton, Britons Protection and Cumberland. Everyone in the group appeared to like the Beartown and the Britons Protection ales however, the Cumberland was less popular.

My only gripe, as with a growing number of pubs in Manchester, was the price. All of the ales were well over £3.00, which is frankly too much for a city in the North of England.

That said, we had a superb night and this is a place I’ll definitely return to.

One other point, the pub's website Ian't accessible for visually impaired who use speech-based access software.
