Came to the Place to celebrate daughter's graduation. Wanted something swanky but not too expensive. What a weird hotel! Having read other Trip Advisor reviews, we went for a corner suite at slightly greater expense. Definitely recommend doing that - the other rooms were strangely glass-fronted on to a public corridor reminiscent of Cell Block H. It is very disconcerting to look right into other guests' lounges and bedrooms. The corner apartments have no such exposure with outward facing windows on both external walls.
Apartment was large and well-furnished but we were greated by dirty pan in the sink and grubby counterpane on the bed. Tried to flag up problems at the reception, which was under-staffed, with English a second language. The rooms have been developed slightly on the cheap - tatty fixtures and fittings and poorly finished. Location brilliant is you arrive by train - car parking available but tricky to access (with tokens and passwords and more expense).
The Place proved adequate but disappointing. Definitely an 'if only' kind of hotel - if only it was properly managed and new cleaning/maintenance contractors hired.More
