First impression on outside is mixed. It's modern and in a nice block but the Wetherspoons nearby is very run down and attracts some unsavory sorts. I don't like Hotels where you have to ascend one floor to reach the reception as this area can be neglected and look untidy. However, this is not too much of an issue at Piccadilly. Upon arrival, i was one of three customers waiting to check-in. Sadly, there is only one attended check-in machine. After a brief discussion, a member of staff took the other customer's name and my name and disappeared into the office. She appeared 5 minutes later with our key-cards. Not a problem, but not very professional.
The journey to the room was a bit of a maze but once there i was greeted with a bright modern room, much improved on the old-style rooms. Everything was how it should be - clean, neat and tidy. My only two minor gripes with the room are 1) the bathroom door did not lock. This was a double room so not a problem except if you are sat on the loo and someone opened the door, you would have a very sore foot! 2) the bed seemed very comfortable on first view but i found the mattress to be very firm. My taste, i appreciate.
The only other inconvenience was people up and down the corridor at all hours, but this is a hotel!
Overall, a big improvement on pre-modernised Travelodges and it's in a great location for Arndale Centre, China Town, Northern Quarter etc. Would consider again.
