“April Rooftop Wedding”
Reviewed 24 May 2013

We have just got married at Great John st Hotel and were really pleased with our day. It was just what we wanted. Yes, it is pricier than most hotels but you realise why once you have stayed there. The staff are extremely professional and polished - as was the whole logistics of the wedding day. They conducted the various room changes etc without you even noticing. The staff were all very friendly and attentive to your every need. Bronwen organised the event from the start and Francesco took over for the actual day of the wedding - excellent!
The venue is simply unique and the rooftop lounge is stunning for a party. I loved the fact it didn't feel stuffy - it is a true boutique hotel and I would highly recommend it to anyone for a special occasion.
What a great start to married life - Thank you to all the staff at Great John st for making our wedding.

I booked to stay from 15th to 17th May for my husband's 30th birthday. I chose GJS because it was billed as a luxurious, unusual hotel - somewhere special for such an occasion. On arrival we were very impressed with the decor, the bathroom and little touches but as our stay progressed things unravelled. Some of the shutters on our windows were broken and we only noticed in the evening. The staff on duty did their best with masking tape but, unfortunately, our sleep was disturbed early both mornings due to the daylight coming through the shutters. Also, we were extremely disappointed to discover what looked like a large comfy queen size bed was in fact two single beds pushed together. For what I paid for our room it was the last thing I expected. Finally, I requested a taxi to be booked for 6.45pm on the Thursday and had an in depth discussion with the member of staff dealing with this request about how we were going for a meal. Shockingly we were woken at 6.45am by a call to our room telling us our taxi had arrived. Although complementary rocky road was left in our room to apologise it was still unacceptable for a luxury hotel.

On the plus side, the breakfast was amazing, the bathroom was lovely and the atmosphere was fantastic.

Overall, if we had paid less for this break I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed with these issues but as this was a special occasion I wasn't happy.

Great hotel in great location. Excellent rooms with very comfortable beds and all mods cons. Staff where great. We could not fault it. however we had had a problem with breakfast fried eggs where a disaster . over cooked and frilly plus the bacon was cooked so long it was dried out. We spoke to the hotel management and they deducted the cost and said they would speak the chef. We said for the price and number of guests plus it is cooked to order it should be superb. However the situation was handled well.

I have stayed here on numerous occasion and can't fault it. I just wish I could afford an 'Eclectic' room every time! Great location, stunning rooms, comfortable bed and good deals on late room bookings. Every time we go to Manchester I start looking at other hotels with the idea of staying somewhere a bit cheaper but then every time I realise it is worth paying that little bit more.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for an eclectic grand suit. Massive bed, very spacious and sumptuous. Amazin...

This is an old victorian school just 10 minutes walk from Manchester City Centre converted at great expense in to a lovely hotel. Every bedroom is individual so ask them to say which one you are having when you book, some are set on two levels, with role top baths and lots of original features, exposed brick work and ornate features. It does has a lush but dark feel but if you want a contrast head to the roof top bar! Service is personal and I found it attentive, the ground floor cocktail bar is cosy and great to have a romantic moment or too, breakfast so leisurely and tasty.

I have both staying independently and been to an event there - check what else is going on in the hotel because it does get used for some corporate events which either book out space (such as the roof) for exclusive use or might affect your stay especially during the week.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front at least have a view of Coronation Street - until it moves to Salford anyway!

Having used TripAdvisor for many years, we’ve never actually left a review. However, following our wedding on a Friday in April of this year, we felt obligated to let everyone know how good The Great John Street Hotel is!

We booked the venue 18+ months in advance and from ‘Day 1’ Bronwen (the wedding planner) was brilliant. Very attentive, always happy to reply to queries, no matter how small (she has the patience of a saint). The 'handover' to Dave who delivered our big day was very helpful, and Dave himself was a true professional. When the bride is 7 months pregnant, its not the easiest of days to plan, but again Dave was always on hand to help. The amount of comments that we've had about the day 'flowing' have been numerous - Whilst everything was 'planned' to within an inch of its life, Dave simply eased people / events along, nothing felt rushed, which was the relaxed atmosphere we always envisaged!

The rooftop garden was the perfect setting (we got married there and held the reception), plus GJS even made sure the Manchester weather behaved itself! The Hog Roast was a real focal point throughout the day, and the service from all of the staff was exemplary. We’d like to say a special mention to the breakfast staff who knew us personally by the time we left, they made us feel so much at home.

The rooms blew people away, and ours (#32) was a real ‘experience’, not just somewhere to sleep. Double baths, walk in showers, 25ft curtains, mezzanine floor, what more need be said! We can see why most people see this as the place to stay in Manchester City Centre.

We won’t go on any further, if you’re considering this hotel for any occasion, just book it, you won’t be disappointed. We’ll be back next April to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary in style!

I recently stayed at the Great John Street hotel and cannot praise it enough. I unfortunately stayed only one night and did not get the opportunity to eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food. The room which was a baby grand and therefore their smallest and cheapest room was one of th enicest rooms that I have ever stayed in. It was a duplex room, with the bathroom upstairs, the design was wonderful and managed to keep the original features too. A wonderful full length window meant a lovely light room too. The quality of all the furnishings was superb from the bed sheets, the oak flooring, the bed and not to mention the wonderful home made biscuits that were complimentary. The upstairs roof terrace in the hotel gave wonderful views and then there was the hot tub available 24 hours as well. The staff from booking in were friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate recommending this hotel to my friends and will certainly stay next time I am in Manchester!

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room and I stayed in room 15 which indeed was quiet, but I feel that due to the...
