With afternoon tea being back in vogue so many hotels and restaurants now offer it, but so many produce absolute rubbish. The Great John Street Hotel is not one of those. The tea is really, really lovely and should be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys this most British of pastime. I think the white chocolate and salted caramel loaf was my favourite of the cakes and beef and horseradish my favourite sandwich. Well done to the chef!

Stayed here for 1 night on the 17th nov 2013 , after arriving early we gave our bags to reception who told us we could leave them there and he would put them in our room whilst we did some Xmas shopping, on return we were given our room and took the key and went up stairs , only to find out our room had someone else's bag in it with ours no where to be seen , I went back down to reception who then gave us a free upgrade( because they had no other room available ) , so again took are key and luggage which was still in reception up to our new room , AGAIN only to find the lounge settee full of ( what I would discribe as bodily fuild) and our bed with a wet stain in it. I asked reception if the hotel manager could come and investigate what I had found , he did and in fairness he was very apologetic as we're all the staff, so AGAIN we were moved to another room , thankfully this room was ok , all this hassle when I had told the hotel on the time of booking that this year had been pretty upsetting for me and my wife and very distressing , I think they could have paid more attention to our notes and the condition of the rooms , we paid £124 per night for this and were offered no compensation for our further distress caused by moving from room to room and spending nearly 1hr and 30 min doing so ,
Hotel is in a great location with friendly staff , but I think attention to detail should be key as your paying a high rate per and maybe look at customers request as these are very very important ,

Reception area is a bit small, but the staff are great. Rooms are very well decorated and welcoming. The solid wooden floors and furniture add to the unique feel of this hotel. The bar area is stocked with premium products and the staff again are great. The rooftop "play Area" is also great, with views over Granada Studios Coronation Street area. The jacuzzi is also situated up there and is a great end to a day! Overall, a great relaxing stay with great staff. Cant fault anything apart from the small reception area and lack of on street parking, but it is very centrally located and plenty of other parking around the area.

Room Tip: Late room availability offers higher grade rooms at discounted prices. Well worth the upgrades to th...

This is a unique hotel and in my opinion nothing else comes close. Historically, the hotel was an old Victorian school house which has been transformed into a chic townhouse. Each room has it's own distinctive style with original features of the building - stripped floorboards, floor to ceiling windows and cast iron fireplaces. These are complimented by rich fabrics, roll top baths, walk-in showers, twin sinks and huge comfortable beds with drift away pillows... It really is a luxurious retreat. I think it's very difficult to create the right atmostphere in a hotel but GJS has created this effortlessly. The lounge and bar area creates a sense of ambience and the hot tub on the roof terrace is a great place to chill and drink champers! Each time I stay I have the most fabulous experience and find it so difficult to leave!

From the street this place doesn't look like much, but once inside you will feel cocooned - this is an oasis in Manchester.
The quirky rooms with open-plan bathrooms upstairs are just delightful, as is the plate of freshly baked cookies left to welcome you.
The lounge and bar is very cosy and welcoming, so if you can't bear to face the weather just stay in and have a well cooked bistro-style meal ( the steak & frites is excellent.)
The roof terrace is lovely in summer and nice in winter if you get near a heater. If you're REALLY keen you can even spy on Coronation St from here as the hotel is right beside Granada Studios.
The only note of caution I would add is to be careful with on-street parking as the attendants are pretty mercilous if you run over your time.
If your'e looking for an alternative big steel and chrome hotels, try this one - you'll be hooked!

I booked this hotel as part of a gift to my boyfriend for his birthday. When we arrived at the hotel we were over the moon to be told we had an upgrade, we left our bags with reception and carried on with our day - I had booked a tour of old Trafford. On return to the hotel we were shown to our room which was absolutely beautiful, a split level room with its own sitting area. The room had lovely touches like fresh baked biscuits and bath robes next to the freestanding bath in the bedroom. We had a few drinks in the bar and the staff went to the effort to print off a map to show us where to go shopping etc! Had a great nights sleep and the room was lovely and romantic. Next morning we left our bags at reception while we went shopping to collect later which is a great touch as we didn't want to carry them round with us all day. All in all a fantastic trip at a beautiful hotel with lovely staff. We will most definitely be back!
