“Lovely, lovely hotel and first rate service”
Reviewed 4 July 2009

We just spent a night at Great John Street and had a wonderful time. We booked on the day so got a quite reasonable late rate. We stayed in their most basic room - the baby grand - not basic at all in fact. All the facilities you could want and beautifully decorated.

What really made the room better than most other hotel rooms I have stayed in, though, was the split level layout, with the bathroom on a mezzanine level. This means that the room itself is larger than usual and that the bathroom is enormous by hotel standards, with separate little wet shower room and toilet cubicle. The shower was a joy, especially as the weather was extremely hot.

The staff were unfailingly friendly, polite and helpful. Special thanks to the person who made our sandwiches at midnight - I know it's his job, but he was so helpful and charming and took real trouble over serving us.

Generally a place to recommend and to which to return. If nothing else, we would like to enjoy the roof terrace and hot tub.

Six of us stayed at this hotel in order to celebrate my partner's 50th birthday, and all of us agreed that this was a real find. The place has been beautifully and thoughtfully designed, with proper attention to detail; the duplex rooms were exceptional - especially the roomy shower, the comfortable bed, the highly effective thick curtains, and the views over the Coronation Street set (!); the staff were, without exception, charming, friendly and helpful; the breakfast was excellent (we went for the full English); the roof terrace and the main bar were great places to hang out... the list goes on. We paid £140 per room for "boudoir grand" duplex rooms, and we managed to negotiate breakfast as part of the deal by calling them direct. Considering the superior "boutique hotel" quality, we thought this was terrific value for money. The location might not be slap-bang central, but it was still an easy walk to the shops and the hotel benefitted from being tucked away on a quiet side street. All of us said we'd use this hotel again, for future visits to Manchester.

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights for a Christmas shopping trip/weekend away. We loved the duplex room, bath and waterfall shower and it was a decent size for central boutique hotel. The bed was comfortable and our room was quiet. We also used the bar upstairs which was cozy and great for a nightcap. The location was great for the shops, restaurants and bars (even meant we could come back and drop some bags off before doing more shopping!). We wanted to visit again last year but it was fully booked up. We will definitely stay here again next time we're in Manchester though.

Spent three nights at gjs hotel and have to say it is one of the best. If you like small, boutique hotels this is perfect for you. Breakfast in the morning was delicious with a variety of choice. The meals in the bar were extermely good with big portions. Cocktails were delicious! All staff very friendly. Room was gorgeous, clean and modern with the air of Victorian still visible, we stayed in the Classical Grand and werent disappointed at all. Shower was amazing like being in a rainforest rainfall. Would defiantely recommend especially for couples of any age. Quite a lot of stairs and lift only goes to second floor so you have to walk to the roof top up another two flights - so if anyone has difficulty with this just bear it in mind. A lovely place to get away relax and unwind and perfect distance to drive into Manchester for some retail therapy or skiing at Chillfactor! Beautiful!

My wife and I stayed at the fabulous Great John Street Hotel for one night on May 24th, we were upgraded to a room classed as a "Classical Grand Junior Suite", number 23. The J/Suite was duplext style, bedroom downstairs, loung & bathroom upstairs. The bed was probably the most comfortable we have slept in, the roll style bath was superb and the luxury amenities made our stay most amazing. The staff were amongst the most polite and attentive we have found in any hotel. The hotel is ultra chic, with fantastic bar and also a roof top patio garden with hot tub, sun beds, hammock and other comfortable seating. Book this hotel and you will not be disappointed, we will be back very soon.

I stayed here for one night in April. We stayed the second night at the Arora as i like to change and then you can get a good comparison.

The service is good here and the breakfast is the best i have had. Great selection.

The rooms are a good size. I booked last minute and got a bed and breakfast rate. I would have normally gone for the next size up to what i had to book but all those rooms were gone.
The room we stayed in was a classical room and it was clean and tidy. There was a roll top bath in the corner of the bedroom which was a novilty!

The only thing i would complain about is that i ordered a wake up call and i never got it but apart from that i cannot fault the service.

It is not as central as i would normally would book but it is within walking distance to the centre of town. For this reason only i would probably book the Midland rather than this hotel. We have actually booked the Edwardian in November for one night (as we have not stayed there yet) but at present the Midland is top, this is a close second!

We stayed here on 31 st Oct last year. The experience from start to finish was very special. We checked in during the afternoon and then headed to the shops (a short walk away) for a bit of retail therapy. On our return to our room we were greeted by warm, homemade halloween biscuits in a little gift bag- a lovely touch we thought! The room was beautiful, split level with a lovely big bed and roll top bath.
We also gave the hot tub a try- it was great watching the sun go down on the roof terrace with a glass of wine or two.
The oyster bar is stunning, as is the rest of the hotel. In fact, we love the hotel that much that we have booked our wedding here next year- Can't wait!
