“Great staff but some very, very rooms noisy!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2013

After dropping our car off at the expensive but nearby multi-story car park and stepping over the people begging for loose change near the entrance we entered the hotel and the check-in staff were great. We were given a very large family room with 3 beds for my wife and I with our 2 children (third floor).

Unfortunately our room was on the side of the main road which resulted constant noise throughout the night - not just a rumble though, this was like being in a war zone! Police cars, ambulances, speeding cars, racing motorbikes - you could hear it all .. and all night.

Reluctantly I mentioned this to the lady on reception first thing the next morning who was very apologetic and tried to explain that it was a city centre hotel and noise was inevitable. She also explained that this was an "older" property which didn't have the sound proofing found in a modern hotel but next time to request a family room facing the "courtyard" as these tend to be much quieter. I later found out the outside window (outside window of the double glazing) was ajar and could not be closed without a special square key - although there was still lots of noise when this was held shut it was a little better.

The bottom line is this is a budget hotel in an average part of Manchester attracting people on a night out looking for a cheap place to sleep - maybe I was expecting a little too much.

Incidentally if you are visiting the Palace Theatre, the location is great - its only about 50 yards away.

Room Tip: The quieter rooms are opposite the courtyard - try and avoid the road side rooms if you want to slee...

There are little signs on the stairwell doors asking guests to close doors quietly as guests may be sleeping. What they need are HUGE flashing signs in all corridors asking guests not to stand in large groups outside rooms shrieking at all hours. OK so the great central location and price will inevitably attract groups, but 'value for money' is dented by not being able to sleep - even with earplugs - because the long corridors are teeming with noisy hens. Minor niggles: room had a strange fusty smell, but you adapt to it after a few minutes; its very hard to read in the very low voltage lighting; the picture on the TV kept breaking up; and the pillows are the thin synthetic kind. VERY good staff though and the pricey breakfast buffet was value for money because it was so good.

I was able to book a room in the Portland at an attractive price through the Premier Inn website. My visit to the Hotel was most enjoyable. The staff were very helpful and standards of cleanliness and comfort were superb.

For a budget hotel, you can't really fault the premier inn group. This hotel in particular is ideally located for a number of bars, restaurants and travel links. I live quite local to the manchester area and only stayed here to make the journey home easier after a Christmas party but would definitely recommend to friends.

Took my my family to see The Lion King and the hotel very close to theatre which is why I chose it. Was not expecting much if I'm honest due to price but what a pleasant surprise. Good size and clean room, nice powerful shower and our evening meal was excellent I would definitely recommend the food. Peaceful nights sleep couldn't hear any other guests or outside noise. Breakfast also a high standard. Staff very friendly and helpful and will certainly be using Premier Inn in the future.

Stayed with my 3 children just for a night, as we had booked to watch Lion King on Valentine's Day. It was so convenient for the Palace Theatre, and also for Pizza Express where we chose to eat. Everything we needed was within walking distance, which was great, as travelling with 3 children via train is challenging! Manchester Oxford Road station was also really close. The room was cosy, quiet and comfortable and breakfast was great. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Really great value for money overall...especially if you take the time to book in advance. Would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: corner room was very spacious
