“Ideal For SportCity”
Reviewed 21 November 2011

The first impression of the hotel is of a medium security detention facility. It is located in a run down industrial area, and has high fences and CCTV all around. There is free parking for guests, and that CCTV is reassuring, although we never felt unsafe or uncomfortable in the neighbourhood.

We chose the hotel because it is in walking distance of the Velodrome at SportCity, meaning it's also in walking distance of Manchester City's stadium. It's not in easy walking distance of the city centre, so if you're looking for a central hotel look elsewhere, but remember you'll likely have to pay for parking. The hotel is on a regular bus route into town.

The room was a reasonable size, there was tea and coffee, and although the bed was 'continental style' with twin beds locked together to create a kingsize it was comfortable and we slept well. Almost everything worked, we couldn't get the plug out of the bath but that was not a major problem. There is Sky Sports but only in the bar, the in-room TV just has standard channels. We didn't try the restaurant or blow £10 each on breakfast.

The location made this hotel a winner for us, we'd certainly choose it again for events at the velodrome or Man City.

Loads of free parking, great staff, fantastic dinner and a good nights sleep. Check-in was efficient and friendly and they recognised me as a Priority Club member. A standard Holiday Inn bedroom, no less than I would expect, a good size zip-lock bed but the room was exceptionally clean and well presented. We had a drink in the bar before dinner, the staff were attentive and friendly and there was a good atmosphere (the City game had just finished and they had won so the travelling supporters were in good spirits). Dinner was fantastic, great portion sizes, fabulous quality and what appeared to be home-cooked food rather than the usual Holiday Inn standard and the menu was really reasonably priced. The minor negatives - the location which looked like a business estate, however at no time did we feel security was an issue and for anyone travelling to the Etihad Stadium (we weren't) this is a brilliant location. Also, my parents, who are light sleepers, did not sleep exceptionally well due to traffic/other guest noise, however myself and my nephew slept fine.

Back to normal...The last HI didn't have parking unless you paid extra. But this one was as I expect...Plenty of parking, nice rooms and smoking rooms as well...Nice bar and the food was good...10/10

The plus points:
- Helpful staff
- modern and clean
- comfortable beds
- great shower

The negative points
- Our bath didn't work so we had to move rooms
- the walls and ceilings are paper thin - we stayed on a Saturday night and between 2 am and 4 am we were woken up by drunk people coming back and banging doors, shouting in corridors etc
- Room service is not 24hr as advertised ... its hot food until 9.45pm and then just sandwiches !!!
- The location - its on a main road in a VERY rough area. Lots of high rise council blocks etc You can't walk around and despite the car park having CCTV etc - we were worried about our car all night.

Room Tip: We had an executive room and its was very spacious. Would also suggest top floor - as ceilings are...

I have stayed in a lot of Holiday inns and this is my favourite. Although about £7 taxi ride from centre, free parking on site and not having to srive into city centre is a bonus. It is extremely modern, if you are a priority club member they always reconise this and make you feel special (which is a nice touch) and our room got upgraded last time without asking. Staff are friendly and professional. The only downside is location. Although secure it is just off a main road and not much in the vacinity.

Modern hotel set for some reason in an industrial area. Helpful reception staff when we arrived, lift available but only a few floors high so we used the stairs. You need to be aware that smoking rooms are available so make your preference clear. Breakfast till 10 am, tho you wouldn't have thought so when we turned up at 9.40. Not much left on the hot plate, some cereals and toast. Someone did offer to fry us an egg but we said we would have what was left, but we didn't even get that as the whole lot went before we had chance to eat our fruit. I am not complaining about this as it seems fairly widespread and we don't eat a big breakfast anyway. Good job too!! Room was fine apart from quilt on the bed making it very hot to sleep. A lighter weight would do the job during the summer. Dinner was good though, very helpful multitasking young receptionist was the waiter that evening which was very quiet due to being a Friday.

Hotel was booked for me. Very happy with my stay. Hotel well located for people travelling (close to motorway links), but seemed to be a nice looking hotel built in the wrong area of manchester (The external security measures are a little off-putting, though they are supposed to add a sense of well-being).

Very clean and well maintained inside and out. Pleasant staff both on reception and in the bar area (reasonably priced). Reasonably priced food. Enjoyed my meal, which i had sent to my room (chargeable).

Four small moans, and these relate to hotels in general.

1. Poor mobile signals in some areas with 3G non-existent (most service providers have booster boxes which can be bought, and hotels need to get onboard with them).
2. Wi-Fi Access: Stop charging for it. It's a necessity now for many people, especially when on business or travelling with kids.
3. Advertising Sky TV. Yes its in the bar (to get you in there), but in rooms, most of the channels seemed unable to connect to the network, or were blocked/subscription. Come on, with some of the prices charged for a nights stay, is sky TV too much to ask as you relax in your room??
4. Stop charging for room service. If i eat in my room, it means that i am not taking up a four person table in the restaurant, giving you much more earning potential. You should be paying me for doing that, not charging me.

This hotel was booked for me, however, when i look for hotels, free wifi is one of the defining criteria in my choice. Many hotels claim to be 'cheap', but when you add costs like wi-fi, and all the other extras, you may as well book at an upper range hotel where its all in.
