First off we got off the train at Manchester Picadilly and the City in is RIGHT there - in front of you. 300yards tops! Despite this, and the fact it overlooks Canal St. it is one of the quietest hotels we have ever stayed especially considering the fact it was full!
Welcomed warmly, had requested and got an early check in, but was given a smoking room which was rank and felt dirty but it was changed immediately with the minimum of fuss and what I felt was a sincere apology. Booked through last min.com and there was not the option to request smoking/none.
Our new room was so nice. Light, airy, spotless and not the biggest but more than adequate. There were also nice touches like ironing board and iron, hairdryer, safe, minibar, white company cosmetics, free wifi (YES!!!!! said our iphones) and an imac computer/entertainment system. Shower was excellent bed was comfy. Top banana!
We had been shopping at the xmas markets during the day (walking distance) before the heavens opened and we decided last minute to eat at the city cafe - which surely should be called the city restaurant. We were advised to make a reservation but there really was no need as they were not nearly full, no idea why as although it was a bit on the pricey side the service was excellent and the food delicious!
Check out is at 12 which I thought was excellent because after the best undisturbed night's sleep I'd had in ages and an actual lie in I would not have time to be blasted under the power shower! We didn't have breakfast at the hotel so can't comment...
Would I go back YES
Would I recommend to a friend YES and have done so already
Trying to think of a reason to go to Glasgow or westminster etc etc now so I can sample another City Inn.
If i was booking direct with the hotel I would ask for a room not facing the train station as there is a rather annoying 30ft tv screen nailed to the side of the building!!
