“A Real Surprise”
Reviewed 21 January 2011

I stayed at the rebranded city inn hotel in Manchester for 1 night. The purpose of my stay was to attend a family funeral. We arrived late on the train from London and it was great to discover that the hotel was really close to the station. On entering the hotel, we were warmly greeted by the recption staff and check in was completed very quickly and efficently. We were given clear guidance on where our room was located and how to access the lifts. Our room was on the 3rd floor and was a well appointed room with a very nice corner window area which was very welcomed as we relaxed with a glass of wine after the stress of the day and the journey from London. It was also very pleasant to have a view of the city below.
The recption staff the following morning were again very helpful in allowing us to store our luggage which we then collect on our return to London.
We have stayed at the formerly named city inn in Bristol many times but we were more than satisfied with our current stay in Manchester and looking forward to booking a return stay in the not too distant future.

Stayed here in January on the assurance of the manager that this stay would be better than my November experience (prior to the rebranding from city Inn) which was terrible. Found the upgraded room to be the same as the standard apart from it being unoticeably larger with a bowl of fruit. Same (if not worse) dirty bathroom floor, mouldy shower and stained carpet. There are bathrobes which I think are meant to be a luxury extra but both were stained. Poor service at Breakfast, waited a long time for tea and toast, Comfortable bed but ridiculous Applemac TV which kept freezing and the sound went off etc etc etc. There are no baths in this hotel unless you buy a suite which are extremely expensive. I think this is a love it or hate it hotel as it is clearly popular. I have tried it twice and would not return, there are far nicer, cleaner and more welcoming hotels in Manchester in my experience.

Stayed just for one night but would definitely return. The hotel is just across the road from piccadilly station. It's modern, the rooms are clean, trendy with neat features like fold away mirrors and a Mac PC! Lovely new bathroom, white, chrome and 'white company' toiletries for a little bit of luxury! If you like modern luxury then this is for you. Really reasonably priced too (the overnight stay). We did nearly fall over when we ordered a bottle of water at the bar and were charged £4.75!!! Also breakfast was £15.75 per person! Both of these issues were easliy fixed...there's a tesco metro just around the corner and for breakfast we walked to Bella Pasta in town for a latte and breakfast for both of us for the same price as 1 breakfast in the hotel and view across the central square so good for people watching! Despite the food/water prices I would definitely stay again and would definitely recommend to anyone away on a city break who wants an excellent location to the city and modern comforts.

Arrived on a Saturday night with my partner, greeted by a very friendly and professional receptionist who informed us on all the features of the hotel. The room was amazing - great bathroom with powerful and roomy shower, bed was comfortable, the iMac / TV was great and the whole room was very stylish. Hotel bar was very pricey but totally expected as this is the case with most hotels. There was a good selection at breakfast - full cooked english, pastries, toast, etc.

Overall, a very impressive place.

Stayed here on the basis of reviews on TripAdvisor. A cracking place to stay in the centre . Great, friendly service from check-in, funky cocktail bar and restaurant (fab breakfast by the way). Surprisingly well-equipped rooms starring an iMac and ultra-comfortable bed.
Top value hotel, unbeatable location if you arrive or leave by train and crawling distance from the flesh-pots of Madchester!

My fiance and I booked 2 days through a last minute hotel website as he needed to be there for a modelling competition so we decided to spend a couple of days shopping and exploring. It was a long journey all the way from Kent and we opted for the best reviewed hotel we could find and got a good rate online of £120 for a double room for the 2 nights.

We did note that we never recieved email confirmation of our booking/payment or any pre-arrival instructions. I was constantly worrying that the hotel might not have our reservation down correctly and even printed out the on screen confirmation. Thankfully it seemed our reservation was there. Although there was a bit of faffing about as there was apparently another customer under the same name. However, we checked into our room speedily. NOTE: I strongly advise you, if they ask, NOT to pay for your extras by card, choose to pay CASH. This is so that you are not mistakenly charged for your extras and have the chance to dispute them on checkout as we needed to!

We were impressed with the style, theme and sleekness of the room and found everything functional and efficient. My only problem was regarding the lighting there was seemingly no main central room light just small desklamps sscattered about so to get a reasonable amount of light you haad to flip them all on, including the bathroom light, and keep the bathroom door open. During the night it would be near impossible to do anything very delicate that required bright light as the lighting was simple not sufficient for that.

The imac was great! We watched it the whole time we were in the hotel relaxing and streamed 4od and megavideo easily. Unfortunately viewing webpages was quite slow and inconsistent but we were able to do that on our own laptop without interruption.

While in the room we did not want for much, it was well equipped and we enjoyed the complimentary tea. We would have liked to have had a fridge (I noticed some people said they did have one, we could not find one in our room?) as the food was very expensive in the hotel so we did eat out or pop up the road to the supermarket. Unfortunately we could not refridgerate our food and had nowhere to store it so left it there. We also found the waste basked an insufficient size, we filled it up in no time and it was never emptied. For anyone looking for a nice but cheap meal don't go to Wetherspoons it is much more expensive there than our local one, we found! However just a couple of doors down is a pub called The Picadilly which does 2 meals for a fiver! It's a pretty standard choice including a steak pie meal, lasagne and garlic bread and salda, sausages and mash or fish and chips. We were expecting small sized meals so ordered 2 each but they were quite sizable in the end and we were very full when we left! A local advised us the reason the place was not as busy as Wetherspoons despite the low prices was because 'everyones been barred!" which we had a chuckle at.

It was a great shame regarding the double bed as it appeared to be split down the middle, or using two single matresses meaning it was not comfy at all to sleep in the middle and so we were squished over to one side, or each at opposite sides. We ddecided to squish up together and the matress was very comfy and we slept soundly, but woke up feeling a little stiff due to the squishing! The second night we descovered that it was comfier for us to sleep horizontally across the bed as we did not notice the gap as much, something you should not have to do when you pay good money for a hotel in my opinion.

On the second day we noticed some very off putting mould and growths inside the air con above the shower. Once my partner noticed it was very hard not to forget it and I kept looking at it and feeling disgusted! It was all bobbly and green and I was praying the whole time it wouldnt fall down on top of me as I showered, what a horrible thought!

During our stay, our room was not cleaned by room service at all. We requested room service only oncewhen we ordered additional towels as the 2 of us had both had a shower the first day and required fresh ones for our 2nd morning. We waited about 15 minutes but they did not arrive so we used our previous days ones. After, we called downstairs and cancelled as we no longer needed them and not to worry. Obviusly they did worry because a few minutes later some were brought up. A nice gesture but unfortunately far too late, and the towels were consequently not used.

We did not use the bar or restaurant as they were far too expensive and added a 10% service charge on top which I found a bit cheeky seeing that it was inside our own hotel. I'd be happy to tip at a place I was not staying but surely the money you paid for the room already pays the staffs wages! I believe tip should be optional, not forced on you. We chose to eat and drink elsewhere. We also did not use the fitness room. My partner was not aware of it, I was only aware because I'd read it online but it was not made clear exactly where it was, but we had no urge to use it on a leisure trip in any case.

Check out went smoothly except that we were advised we needed to pay for extras. We did not have any extras so asked the desk clerk to elaborate. She advised we had ordered 2 newspapers. We did indeed find newspapers outside our room for both days which we brought in and ignored. We thought it was complimentary since they had our room number on them and we had not ordered them, otherwise we would not have taken them and would have called room service to take them back. They attempted to charge us for £1.50 for them and my partner accepted that but I took a stand and advised that we would not be happy to pay for them since we never ordered them. We never ever mentioned newspapers and were never asked if we required them. I can only conclude that it was a mix up, or that they do this on a regular basis to guests to bring in extra money due to the service charges they put on top of the paper cost.

All in all the hotel was what we were expecting and we were satisfied with our stay. I'd definately stay there again if we could get the same rates, but would request a fridge in the room, a double bed that is not two singles thrown together with a gap down the middle and I would request that they clean the air con thoroughly as well.

Stayed at Hotel for 4 nights from 31st December. Arrived at Picadilly Train Station from Manchester Airport and on leaving the station you are at the Hotel within 3 minutes walking. Check in was excellent, quick and local knowledge of the area coming from the staff was very helpful. The room which was on the 7th floor was a nice size and was extremely well finished with imac TV, fridge, in room safe, well stocked mini bar good air conditioning unit and a bathroom that was well appointed with the usual towels ,toileteries etc. The Hotel is in an excellent location for exploring Manchester Central and beyond. The train station is close at hand and within a short walk is the tram stops which are a good and cheap way of getting around. Plenty of good resturants within walking distance from the Hotel and good shopping at the Arndale Shopping Centre. Did not eat at the Hotel but had a drink in the Bar which I found to be very expensive. One pint of Lager and a Pinot Grigio glass of wine came to £14.05. The wine was £10.15 and the beer £3.90 and the bill had a 10% Tip added to it. Needless to say we found plenty of other licensed premises in the vicinity to have a drink. Being over the New Year we were out quite late and even with the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door we found it difficult to get a good nights sleep, room service staff were quite noisy going about their work and seemed to ignore the signs on the door. Other than that I cannot fault this Hotel and I would definately consider staying here again if I was in Manchester.
