When my partner and I want a reasonably priced meal this is one of our favourites. They are always doing early bird offers which attract a cool gay crowd. Food is excellent and always tasty. Wines are great value

On a recent trip to Manchester with work colleagues we went to Velvet for an after dinner drink. We were a large group of 10 and chose to sit outside as the weather was lovely and warm. We went inside to order a round of drinks and the bartender had a very peculiar and rather inconsistent policy regarding glass and plastic. Some of the drinks were put in the appropriate glasses: red and white wine in wine glasses, brandy in a snifter, gin and tonic in a glass. She then started to pour a rum and coke but in a plastic cup, a pint of ale in a plastic cup and when she was asked to leave a corona in the bottle instead of decanting it into a plastic cup. She insisted that glass was not allowed outside but the 10 drinks ordered were all being taken outside. When questioned again she did not offer any additional explanation nor did she acknowledge that the protocol did not make sense.

We came to the bizarre conclusion that perhaps their was some sort of drink hierarchy that deemed people who drink lager, ale and rum are not trustworthy and therefore should only be given plastic cups. Gin, wine and brandy drinkers however are more sophisticated and can be trusted with Velvet's fine glassware.

Whatever the case we found the service was not welcoming and although the hotel and restaurant look lovely we will not return there until the customer service is greatly improved.

Great Sunday afternoon chilling out. Wife and I enjoyed the atmosphere of a reasonably full Canal Street as the sun was at its best. Great service and drinks were reasonable. A few choices down the street but Velvet seemed to have the best clientele for a 'smart' Sunday afternoon.

Eaten here many times - but last two times poor choice - menu doesn't change - steak was very undercooked - i.e. raw, when I asked for medium rare. Not good.

Good food. great ambience always packed, and excellent service. Value for money is excellent. You can have a 3 course meal with drink for 30 quid a head-thats a steal deal.
