Description: It's not often you find the perfect neighbourhood restaurant with a stylish dining room, stellar food and friendly service but Rhubarb in West Disbury, Manchester, ticks all of the boxes. With quaint window boxes, mulberry coloured feature walls and walnut chairs, the dining room is light and airy, decorated with graphic floral canvases and filled with fashionable locals and Mancurian regulars who keep coming back for the cosy ambience and convivial atmosphere. The hearty international menu at Rhubarb includes favourites such as the Porcini mushroom risotto dressed with truffle oil and Parmesan cheese; the slow-cooked lamb shank served with pumpkin and cheese mash and root vegetables; and the skate wing cooked with capers, lemon and herbs with fried potatoes.

“Great food and service.”

We went to Rhubarb partly because we couldn't get in anywhere else. Some of the recent reviews concerned us but I have to say our experience was excellent. It was a good honest restaurant with excellent service. Nothing fancy but the food was excellent. Two of us had lamb and although some may have found it a little undercooked, we thought it was perfect. Lovely flavour, tender and pink. Our other guest had the duck which was equally good. I suggest you ignore some of the recent posts and give it a go. We will certainly return. Thanks for a lovely meal.

“A change does not make this as good as the rest”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2013

We were recently enticed to eat at Rhubarb in Didsbury with an offer of a free bottle of wine and as we had not visited this establishment for some time we thought we would take advantage of their kind offer. We have tried to book a table in recent weeks but this has proved to be very difficult, the dedicated telephone number was always out of order and when we drove passed the restaurant it was obviously undergoing some form of redecoration and closed for business so this invitation to return was quite pleasing. However, there has obviously been a change of ownership with some subtle differences to both the decor and more importantly the menu.

Although we recognised some of the staff who, as always were extremely pleasant and helpful, there were quite a few empty tables during our visit and it soon became evident that all was not well.

Having both chosen a starter of Pan fried haloumi, little gem & apple salad, lemon & pine nuts we were disappointed that the dressing, which we can only describe as a sweet tasting of "caramel", dramatically detracted from the flavours of the haloumi cheese, there was no evidence of Apple salad but there was a small leaf of lettuce with a scattering of pomegranate seeds.

For the second course my wife ordered the Pan fried breast of herb marinated chicken basil new potatoes, warm salad of chargrilled Mediterranean summer vegetables which were very undercooked and she immediately detected the same type of sweet "caramel" dressing smeared across the chicken.

I ordered the Lancashire lamb rump with roast sweet potato and coriander mash & crispy fried courgettes and was equally disappointed. The lamb was rather tasteless and the roast sweet potato and coriander mash was very 'sloppy' and lacked any sign of seasoning. We decided to decline the offer of a dessert and completed the meal with a coffee.

The free bottle of wine was very nice and we would have been very happy to pay the advertised price of £14.00 for it but sadly the food was not good enough to justify a final bill of £55.00 or entice us for a return visit. We have always enjoyed the ambience and food at Rhubarb but sadly the current offerings fall well below our expectations.

We sincerely hope that the new occupants can soon find their feet and begin to mirror the quality, presentation and standard of the previous owners but we will not be returning given the excellent choice of good restaurants already available to us in South a Manchester.

“Great food and lovely service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

I have been to Rhubarb a number of times in the past 11 years, the last time was with my best friend in the summer when we ate an early evening meal on the terrace which was lovely and we weren't disappointed on Tuesday night! Which was lucky as it was my birthday and I took some of my family. Good choice of food and really a bit different, so well presented too and such good value! and it was well tasty! Big thanks to the chef, good job! The 2 girls serving were helpful, warm and relaxed which is great when eating in a nice place as I dislike stuffiness. It was relatively full for a Tue night which is a good sign and nice as created a good atmosphere. My family were all impressed. Phew!

Have returned to Rhubarb tonight after at least six months-very dissapointed as used to be a favourite haunt.
Initially surprised by set menu on a Saturday night. Were told meal would be awhile as kitchen wanted to ensure it was cooked properly. Half an wait for starter and another for main.
Waitress was lovely, food mediocre and whole place needs a refurb including toilet-seat broken, dryer not working.
Sorry won't be going back :(

“Ok”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013 via mobile

There was very little atmosphere except for the music coming from the kitchen. Wine was ok. A little over priced. Food was tasty though and good value on the deal. Had to get them to check the bill as it was incorrect. Friendly service. In honesty I wouldn't go back by choice.
