Where the Cornerhouse was warm, intimate and a bit shabby, attracting all ages of cinephiles, art students and ‘weirdos’, HOME (it's predecessor) is cold, sterile and full of middle class BBC types ‘doing lunch’. There is no real culture here. It’s not helped by the fact it is slapped in the middle of a glass, corporate village... The theatre is dire (creaky seats). The art gallery a shambles (poor curation, weird space). The cinema is fine, yes, but to be honest I’d rather go to the VUE - it’s cheaper and has a much bigger screen and sound system. The restaurant is poor, with disinterested chatty staff. And the biggest travesty of all? The bookshop! Or lack thereof. Why oh why did HOME not use all the dead space on the ground floor to do a proper dvd and book shop? Something Manchester is lacking anyway! Poor, poor, poor. More
Show lessI have seen some really interesting performances and films at home that you wouldn't find anywhere else in Manchester. One was a breakdancing style performance but to 1920s French jazz music. It is worth signing up to their newsletter to know what's on. The ticket prices are reasonable but the drinks are a bit pricey. The theatre and cinema spaces are very spacious and the restaurant always looks full and popular.
has an excellent schedule of foreign and non-mainstream films. Bar and restaurants are OK, usually busy with acceptable food.
Modern, bright and comfortable cinemas, most of which are quite small and so you feel like you're in a much cosier and comfortable setting rather than a large impersonal cinema. Tickets are really competitively priced but seating is unreserved so, since the cinemas are so small, you need to get there early to avoid sitting on the front row! Convenient Car park adjacent to the building and remember to validate your car park ticket to get 25% off! Lovely bars and restaurants in the complex too. Thoroughly recommend!
This place is “buzzing” came here with family and they catered for young grandchild really well. They also show films etc in a separate small cinema so that is why it’s always busy. Lovely building with a small museum also attached! First street is a new development well worth visiting and several buses stop nearby (mainly the Chorlton buses, 85,86 x every 10 mins from Piccadilly). We came by car and it was tricky to find a spot!
Probably the best place to find independent films. I particularly like the Viva Festival, where you can find a great selection of Latin American and Spanish films.
The restaurant is good, and they have a great deal where you can book film+pizza meal deal with drink, it's called the Reel Deal and you have to book it when paying for your cinema ticket.
The bar on the ground floor is friendly a food has a good vibe too.
If it's one of thos rare sunny days, you can also find some beach chair outside and this year they had a sand pit a giant chess board for the children.
