Grand Hotel du Tonneau d'Or

We stayed here for 2 nights from Friday 14 May 2010 in order to meet a student at the UTBM university. We had previously stayed at the Novotel (which is on the north side of the old town) but they wanted twice the price this time of the Grand du Tonneau. This is located on the south side of the old town and therefore much closer to the shopping area and a shorter walk to the station (about 10 minutes).

The building has a grand opening hall and staircase upto the first floor. At the entrance level is Reception and a PC with free internet access. Off a side corridor is the breakfast rooms. The hotel's main restaurant is closed and notices said that part of the business is for sale.

Our room on the second floor was 237. It was one of two specially designed rooms for handicapped guests. We did not request this and dont know why we got it. It had specially adapted door openings, toilet, wide spaces, and walk in shower. Its two beds were comfortable. It had however a rather austere feel to it. Room numbering on the floor was odd with ours being out of sequence with others - almost as if added as an afterthought.

During our stay a group of cyclists were staying and they had a breakfast room allocated to them. Our breakfast room was smaller. There was a modest selection of cold dishes as a buffet. It cost €12.00 which was a lot compared with better breakfasts elsewhere but the staff were friendly.

A local artist was using the hotel to display a selection of his drawings and we bought one. There were some lovely stainless statues adorning the staircase and hall.

We paid €64.00 per night, pre-paid plus breakfast.

Most other guests seemed to be from the adjoining German speaking area of Switzerland. Their common language with hotel staff appeared to be English.

We would stay again.

This hotel is located in the heart of the old town of Belfort near good restaurants and shops. It is in a very attractive old building with a great lobby that is well decorated with a few pieces of modern art. The rooms were larger than many American hotel rooms and were very nice. What was more impressive than the rooms was the price. This hotel is a great value, which I am sure is as much a function of Belfort prices as anything else. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Belfort, regardless of their budget.

Really amazing !!!
This hotel was a big surprise for us.
We were welcome by a great hall just like a nineteenth-century palace with a long elegant staircase.
Then the rooms were wide and clean with tv, water, bathtub, hair-dryer, mini-bar, map of a city and a sweet
The staff was very kind (we're lost in Belfort while arriving and by mobile they gave us the right suggestions with patience)
The breakfast was good and very complete
At last the price was embarrassing low for all this services.
So what can you ask for more ?
The only spot was Belfort... it's similar to a ghost town... beautiful city but too much human-icy

I stayed here as I went on an educational with work (I work for a tour operator). We weren't told beforehand where we were staying so I couldn't believe it when I walked into this hotel, it was amazing! The group I was with were expecting travelodge type hotels, not this! We all had our own room which again was a surprise. My room was on a corner so it was huge, and had a big double bed. I also had 2 floor to ceiling windows that looked out onto the main street. The bathroom was big and had a bath which i took advantage of! Also had continental breakfast the next morning which again was brilliant. Overall, a fantastic hotel!

This is a truly lovely hotel in the perfect location for shopping, restaurants, and sightseeing in Belfort. The rooms are being renovated right now, so ask for a renovated one. Ours was nicely decorated in pale yellow with deep purple accents, and had a wood floor (what is called "parquet flottant" in France). We paid 114 euros for 2 people. It was very clean and had a large bathroom with a large tub/shower and then the toilet in a separate room. Though it didn't seem to be air-conditioned, they did have a fan in the closet for guest use, and the pair of tall French doors that served as windows opened onto tiny balconies. The bed was 2 twins joined together, and was a bit uncomfortable, but after comparing 3 of the 4 3-star hotels in Belfort, this is still by far my favorite. One advantage of the room was that it had a large entryway with the closet and the entrances to the toilet and the bathroom, then a door to the bedroom which could be closely to very effectively isolate the room from any noise or smoke from the hallway. A negative point is that the hallway and the ground floor lobby smelled like smoke, but this is common in French hotels and may change due to new national legislation scheduled for the end of 2006. The breakfast buffet was very fresh and featured assorted pastries and breads, ham, cheese, yogurt, cereal, juices, and your choice of hot beverage served up by a very polite and attentive welcoming staff (11 euros). We also found the reception staff to be very welcoming and polite. We enjoyed our stay there and heartily recommend it for a pleasant stay in Belfort.

My wife and I stayed with our 19 year old son, at the Tonneau d'Or for several weeks while relocating to Belfort. They did an excellent job converting an ancient govenment office building into a truly nice hotel in classic, elegant French style. It is arguably the nicest hotel in Belfort although it competes with the very large and modern Novitel around the corner.

Lobby area is large, (particularly by European standards) airy and inviting. The rooms are also large by european standards, wonderfully furnished and equipped with all amenities. Plenty of large windows that open wide and are equipped with stout shutters to block the early morning light if you're a late riser or the noise from evening revelers if you're a light sleeper. Closet space was only adequate, but there were three of us.

The rooms are maintained spotlessly and the service is good and efficient. English is not as commonly spoken here as in the popular tourist cities of France, so if you don't speak the language, brush up on a few polite phrases and be prepared to point and shoot at the restaraunt menues.

Most of the rooms have views of the massive and ancient fortress that has guarded this crossroad town for many centuries.

The hotel restaraunt is actually quite good. I don't make hotel food a habit, but this was good enough that my wife requested we celebrate her birthday there just last week. The scallop, mango, avacodo salad is superb and the wine selection is extensive.

Location is perfect. A 5 minute walk from the train station with the always enjoyable 'old town' on one border and the shopping district on the other.

We enjoyed the GTonneau d'Or and have recommended it to friends and business associate.
