If you love the Musee du Cluny in Paris (which I do), then you'll love this. In a beautiful, ancient house not a gargoyle's throw from the Cathedral, you'll find this collection of exquisite carvings and glass, not only from the Cathedral but from many other Alsacian churches as well. There is a wonderful sense of peace and serenity which I found completely lacking in the crowded Cathedral. The artworks are beautifully presented, and it is a revelation to see at close quarters the magnificent statues from the frontage. When they were on the cathedral, they were too high up for one to be able to appreciate the astonishing detail and the fineness of the carving. Similarly the exquisite stained glass, originally installed hundred of feet up, is quite remarkable at close quarters. And when you've had enough of old stone and glass, you can relax in the enchanting little mediaeval garden, surrounded by the bustle of the streets surrounding the cathedral but somehow completely separate from it, an oasis of peace.
