“well done. a must before visiting the town”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

it is hard to appreciate a city to its fullest without knowing about its history. this museum is well done, well organized , very professional and the audio is lively and fun to listen to with plenty of facts that catch our attention: Gutenberg was there. the Marseillaise , the French anthem was conceived there by a young officer to inspire the tro0ps. , the foi gras, local specialty of the region, was developed because , under louis the xiv, the farmers rebelled about having the feed the horses of the garnison posted in Strasbourg. so they switched from oats to maize, which is mainly good for goose feeding.

there is also the serious story about the city. we truly enjoyed it. and we will enjoy our visit of strasbourg even more because of it.

“worth a visit”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We were just killing time before going to the airport and therefore had not planned to visit this museum. Ended up spending nearly three hours in the museum courtesy of the free audio guide you can have on entry- Very informative- some sensors didn't work so we didn't get all the commentary through our head phones but exhibits have English information boards also. Lockers available for storing your bags and these are free

“Musée historique de Strasbourg - A family favourite”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

Visited the museum in May 2014 with our 2 kids (aged 11 and 8).

This is a really well-designed museum that worked real well for our family. The best feature is the interactive audio guides which are included with the price of admission. The guides automatically turn on when you approach an exhibit and give a brief explanation, pressing a button on the guide gives you further details, an ideal compromise for little people and curious adults. As you would expect from a city that hosts the European parliament for 4 days a month the guides are multi-lingual, with German, English and French plus possibly other languages. The museum itself gives you a good explanation of the city's history from it's time as a Free Imperial City within the Holy Roman Empire until the end of the second World War. The only disappointment is that it seems to skip over the "Strasbourg Massacre" of the Jewish population in .Alongside the usual exhibits you also get some fun stuff e.g. Medieval helmets to try on and a fab audiovisual 3D-map show (honestly).

Finally I should mention it has free lockers.

“My favourite museum in Strasbourg!”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

I absolutely loved this informative, imaginative, interactive museum in the ancient town abattoir. I learned an enormous amount about the history of Strasbourg from its wonderful exhibits and the captions which, blessedly, include English translation. The helpful, friendly staff were ever ready to point out how one could press buttons to illuminate exhibits or pull out drawers in plan chests to see documents and other fragile items which are usually protected from the light. There are helmets to try on, exhibits to touch, automatons to operate, it brings out your inner child and real children will love it. Don't miss the enormous model of the city - sit at the far end and you'll see a parade of ghostly ancien regime figures projected onto it via reflections from glass above while music plays. Magical. I just wish I'd had longer to spend here.

“nicely organized and english subtitles!”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

Gives a nice insight into the history of the region with maps, descriptions and show items. It has weapons, some furniture and even some personal items of some famous people from Strasbourg.

It has excellent bathrooms :-)
