The Hotel du Rhin is directly opposite the rail station. The building is old, rambling, and in urgent need of refurbishment. OK for a single night's stay. Breakfast (at EUR6.50 for the basic croissant, pain, confiture et café) did not offer particularly good value for money.

I stayed one night, forced, as I missed my last train. I took the cheapest single room which was tiny, hot, airless, and without any taste. The only way to get some fresh air was to open a tiny window coming out to Place de la Gare - luckily it wasn't very noisy outside. Having seen the toilet I was afraid to see the common bathroom. The staff was just polite. Frankly, I has an impression of getting trapped in some old scary place, no quests, squeaking floor and terribly old lift. Overall impression is very negative. Good points: the room was clean, had a clean towel and a new soap.

I have stayed here twice, not out of choice, but because everything was filled when I was still looking for a room. The rooms are very tiny, the staff very unfriendly and some of the rooms have a common shower one floor down. Worse than school trips. Breakfast is expensive and they only have a croissant and a cup of dreadful coffee in about 10 EUR. The hotel is also very noisy - you can hear street noise and everyone walking on the hallway. And the rooms are rather cold - they tend to give heating only a bit in the morning and a bit in the evening.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with a bath or a shower. Otherwise, you might end up sharing your showe...

If you value sleep and desire a hotel that allows it, then pass on this one. There was a private party hosted by the hotel in the lobby that made it's way throughout the hotel. Not a hotel for somebody coming to enjoy the city and have a quiet retreat for relaxtion.

Room Tip: Not at this hotel

I have stayed in many small and fairly indifferent French hotels, both in Paris and in provincial cities such as Rouen and Strasbourg. The Hotel du Rhin is a cut above the others in terms of cleanliness, quality of bedlinens and bath towels, and general ambience in the public areas. Although the decorations in my room were either tired or basic, the breakfast room was quite charming even though the breakfast itself was not special (OJ, very fresh bread, OK croissant, good coffee). Nespresso is available in the lobby at €1. Wifi not entirely reliable (kept cutting out) but when it worked it was fast - and it was also free. Very convenient location opposite the main station, with excellent tram connections nearby. I would be willing to stay there on my next trip to Strasbourg.

Room Tip: Request a room facing towards the rear, not towards the square; though the view is less good, it wil...

I was hoping to find what I did not get... The night team, and the young receptionist have been truly helpful, and kind in the recommendation and advice they gave us, but it did not cover the weaknesses of the hotel. Rooms are a bit cramp: I had to struggle with my TV monitot to get a decent channel, the corridors were a bit noisy. As I was travelling with a class, I was expecting a better breakfast.... coffee and hot water, that was it..... we asked fro some juice (orange), but gave up when they charged us 1 Euro 50 for a glass....

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years while working in Strasbourg. The quality and size of the rooms varies greatly. If you are a couple, try to get a room with bath and you will be guaranteed a decent size with a large bed. The rooms facing the station square can be noisy, especially the street cleaning at 6am most mornings. Breakfast is standard French buffet fare, quite expensive at 8 euros. The front desk staff are helpful, although the night porter can be a bit grumpy, especially if you come home late after he has locked the front door.

Room Tip: Go for a room with bath.
