“Dead quiet in rooms (outstanding soudproofing)”
Reviewed 13 June 2013

We booked this hotel as we liked the chic modern design of the rooms. We were a bit worried when our room was on the ground level, facing a side street. To our delight, it was as quiet in our room as if we were deep in the countryside. As others have also commented: outstanding, helpful staff, great breakfast buffet, convenient location. Highly recommend this hotel.

If you are in Strasbourg to visit the city center, the location is amazing. You can walk almost everywhere you'd like to go, and the hotel is also a block to the tram where you can access all the rest of the city. All members of the front desk staff are English speaking and very helpful. Because we were going to be there for six nights, we changed from the "budget" room to one with a bigger bed and more space. This was a better choice for us, although the smaller room/bed would have been OK for one person or for a shorter stay. Good breakfast in the morning. We would definitely recommend the Gutenberg.

The Hotel Gutenberg is in a top location in the old town with all the main attractions within walking distance, but also handy to public transport. The hotel has been recently renovated and tastfully decorated with modern decor. Rooms are spacious (at least the "Privilege" rooms) but there was provision for only one suitcase up off the floor. Staff were friendly, efficient and very helpful, and spoke good English that made up for our French (that remained poor despite our best efforts). We especially appreciated the precise directions to the hotel by tram, that we received in advance. Breakfast was adequate rather than extravagant. Check out Christiane's patissserie just around the corner. .. c'est magnifique!

Room Tip: Privilege room if you value a bit of extra space. Some rooms open onto a rear courtyard with a '...

I stayed here for several nights as part of a business trip. The location could not be better for seeing the city--it is right near the cathedral off of Place Gutenberg, so it is easy to get around to all the interesting places in Strasbourg (especially since the city is so walkable). Within a five minute walk you can get to La Petite France, the Cathedral, Place Kleber, the museums, Ponts Couverts, plenty of restaurants, etc. It's also located close to a tram stop, so it's easily accessible if you are arriving into the main train station.

Hotel Gutenberg is in a historic building, so normally you would expect small rooms, a small elevator, funky heating/cooling systems, limited amenities, depressing decor, continental breakfast, etc. However, I was pleasantly surprised! It was renovated recently with a modern decor. I stayed in a Standard room which was small but it was very clean, especially compared to similar hotels. The modern decor is very tasteful and makes it so much more pleasant (you can get a sense of what it used to look like from the stairwell). Yes, the bathroom was really, really small, but it was very clean, and they provide shampoo/lotion and soap (and strangely, bath salts, even though there was no bath). Also, the shower head position made it difficult to shower without bumping into the faucet and accidentally turning it off or changing the temperature. But, compared to other similar hotels, the bathroom was very nice.

Breakfast was extra but worth it, especially since I was limited in time in the mornings. They had in addition to the standard offerings hot food too (sausage and eggs) which is really unusual for a European hotel, so that was nice. Everything was really good, too.

But mostly, these guys get gold stars for service. They were incredibly accommodating and really pleasant, which I was not expecting at all, based on my past experiences at hotels in France. I had some questions and they were always willing to try to answer them, and with no attitude. It was so refreshing! The cleaning crew was nice but they ignored the "do not disturb" sign on the door, and woke me up at one point, but it was fine.

Overall, a superb stay, and excellent in all aspects. I'd definitely stay here again!

We booked three rooms here as there were six of us. The location is fantastic and the hotel represents good value for money. It is impossible to get lost as you just need to look up and find the cathedral which towers above everything in Strasbourg, and then you know you are just a few paces away from your hotel. The reason I have only given very good for this hotel is I was disappointed with the breakfast. There are nice pastries and breads, some cheese and meats, the fruit salad was not at all nice and there were only sausages and you could boil an egg to go with them if you could be bothered. We thought there may have been scrambled egg as apparently the morning before there was, but these did not appear. The coffee was not that great either. The rooms are modern with ensuites, not large but fine by European standards. Staff very pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: Avoid 5th floor as roof line is sloping and you need to be short.

For a short stay in Strasbourg you cannot get a bether location. It is even easy accessible by car with an underground parking just around the corner. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are newly renovated in a modern style. We have stayed there several times - and we'll be back next time.

The Hotel Gutenberg is a lovely hotel in the heart of Strasbourg. The location is perfect, you can reach it easily by tram and car and you can walk everywhere. Coming by car means though to leave your car in one of the expensive car parks throughout town.
We had a superior room, which was spaceous and nicely decorated. The Windows shut away all noise coming from outside (e.g. from the night club opposite to the hotel). On the other hand noise coming from the corridor will bother you. The hotel is small and does though not have too many noisy guests but after 8 am it can get difficult to continue sleeping as the working hotel staff is also around in the corridor.
The rooms are equipped with a/c. The bathroom does not contain a tub but a shower instead. Our bathroom seemed to be renovated but some parts remained and did not get exchanged. For example they kept the glass door of the shower. The silicon framing the shower was exchanged but from the other side of the glass door one could still see the fungi of the old framing below the next silicon. This was not so lovely.
The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. It was very lovely to talk to them.
The breakfast is quite nice. We missed some nice cheese though. There was only shrink-wrapped cheese and cream cheese in plastic portions.
The staff tends to have too much to do around 9-10 am so it can happend that you need to wait 5 minutes to get a plate a coffee pot to get started with your breakfast and the remainings of the other guest will stay for quite a while on the tables.
So what to do?
Ask for room service! It does not cost you anything extra!
And you don't have to bother with all that hassel downstairs.
So all in all a very nice hotel with a few drawbacks. And of course the hotel prices in Strasbourg are on a high level...
