“Very good (apart from a bit of street noise)”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

Overall, very satisfied with the hotel. The price is very good. The service / staff all excellent. The room (Privilge) was perfect - quite large, seemed like new, separate bathroom and toilet.

Nice 'chic boutique' look and feel to the hotel (but without the snooty attitiude that can sometimes go with such hotels).

Great location - right in the center of town, cathedral 2 mins away. Great base from where to base your touristic operations.

Breakfast space is a bit small, but that inconvenience is compensated by the fact that all of the ingredients / produce are fresh and local.

A small touch which I really liked : when we came down for breakfast (a little late) my wife saw that the plate for the local speciality (kougloffe) was empty. When she asked is there was any left the staff member informed us politely that unfortunately it was all gone (it's a popular item at breakfast). We said no problem but the staff member insisted on taking our room number and promising to put aside some for us for the following mornings breakfast.

As suggested in the title of my review - we had a street front room. On night 1 there was quite a bit of noise made by the nightowls returning home with a few beers on board.

If you are a light sleeper, perhaps best to ask for room on the inside of the hotel.

Room Tip: See my comment regarding street front room being a little noisy.

Hôtel Gutenberg is a boutique hotel that offers tiny but clean and well-equipped rooms that are just a couple of minutes away from the Cathédrale. It does not score full 5 points in every aspect, but we consider the overall combination, coupled with very competitive rates, to be worthy of 4.5 points, and certainly better than many “very good” hotels that we have given 4 points in TripAdvisor.

This hotel is located on a small, relatively quiet street next to Place Gutenberg, a square that is just a small block away from the famous Cathédrale. This central location means that all the sights in the main island, from Barrage Vauban and Petite France to Opera du Rhin and Palais Rohan, are within walking distance. The shopping streets of Rue des Francs Bourgeois, Grand’ Rue, and Rue des Grandes Arcades are all close-by, and the train station (Gare SNCF) is 15-minutes of walk away. In short, the location is ideal for sightseeing, unless the focus of the visit is those European Union institutions to the northeast.

Our room was, yes, tiny, and the bed was a full-size one, not a queen. Great for sleeping in pharaoh pose. We were pleasantly surprised, however, by the surprisingly large array of quality amenities. Most everything expected from higher-grade chain hotels can be found. They even have indoor slippers, a rarity in a mid-range European hotel. And the quality of those amenities, like shampoo and such, is well above the mediocre stuff stocked at most other lodgings of this price range. The room was very well insulated and warm, and exceptionally clean. Perhaps this is because Gutenberg belongs to the Hôtels et Résidences Diana, a group of Alsatian and Swiss hotels that seem to be managed together.

The front desk staffs we met were very friendly. The receptionist upon our arrival spoke heavily accented English, but managed to check us in smoothly and provided us a city map as well as tips on nice local restaurants. The two ladies on our check-out day spoke fluent English, courteous, and efficient. The hotel has a dedicated baggage storage room for keeping bags in case guests would like to explore the city for a while after the check-out, which is a nice plus.

To summarize, Hôtel Gutenberg offers excellent location, friendly service, and clean and well-maintained rooms, all at very attractive price. The room is tiny, but we would gladly accept this single drawback for the very competitive price-performance ratio. We do recommend this well-managed boutique hotel to all budget-conscious travelers to Strasbourg.

Dear guests,

Thank you for taking the time to write a summary of your stay in our hotel.
Our location is very convenient because you can visit the main famous places on foot. Each of our Privilege room is unique and decorated differently. In Privilege rooms you find a pair of slippers, a bottle of water, a kettle and a range of welcome products.
Our receptionist team adapts to its customers and speaks several languages like English. You can contact us to book another stay. We will give you a larger room with a bed of 1.60m.

Looking forward to welcoming you soon

Very good hotel where we stayed a couple of nights for the Easter break.
Belongs to a small hotel chain of the area - we actually stayed in another hotel of the group in Colmar.
Location is very central. The room was spacious, very clean and recently refurbished with a couple a fine painting by a modern artist we like very much, Jerome Mesnager.
The very central location of the hotel makes it possibly noisy at night at week-end as there are quite a few pubs in the area.
The breakfast buffet is good though the breakfast area is quite small.

The location of this hotel is excellent-just minutes from the beautiful cathedral. The staff are very friendly and helpful -they booked our favourite restaurant for us (La Couiller a Pot-see separate review). The room was spotless and quiet. However we had booked a Privilege room and have to confess we were slightly disappointed. It was rather dark and the bathroom was very problematic. The shower was in the bath, with only a very short piece of glass and no real shower screen.Everytime we showered there was then a huge puddle of water all across the bathroom floor! ....not what one expects in a 'Privilege'room. Also, there were only 5 hangers in the warderobe. All in all it's ok but not great....perhaps I would recommend avoiding room 208 because of the bathroom problem.

Room Tip: Avoid room 208 as the shower over the bath splashes everywhere causing huge puddles on the bathroom...

Dear guests,
Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor
All reception staff is touched by your compliments. Our receptionists are at your disposal to advise you about tourist places to visit, or to book a table at a good restaurant or a taxi. Regarding the room we thought to do well by giving you a quiet room, but if you want to come again, we will give you a Privilege room on the ground floor, more spacious with a different bathroom. We hope to see you during a next stay.
Best regards

My husband and I just spent 3 wonderful days in the Hotel Gutenberg. The room was small but very clean and had a great view. The hotel staff was pleasant and helpful. The location was perfect, close to everything.

Mixed feelings about this hotel. If you are in Strasbourg as a tourist, you really could not find a better location. Staff seem friendly, although when I rang reception to request an iron and ironing board, the reply was " can you come and get it or do I have to bring it up to you?" which was a disappointing response. We had a basic room on the top floor. The room itself was decorated in a modern style, quite small (although not Parisian small) but the bathroom was minute. Also the bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a thin (frosted) glass door which had quite a gap top and bottom, so it felt like the bathroom was in the bedroom ! If we return to Strasbourg (and I hope to - Strasbourg is a beautiful city) I would probably give this hotel another go if I could get a good deal on one of the "Prestige" rooms found on the lower floors.

We spent 2 nights in Strasbourg and found the Hotel Gutenberg to be in an ideal central location, between the cathedral and Petite France. There are many bars, restaurants and shops nearby; the area is safe and busy with activity. Rooms are tiny -- I think the smallest we have ever stayed in and there was some tricky rearranging of furniture to accomodate our cases, but they are well equipped with modern bathrooms. No bar/mini fridge would be the only thing lacking. We like a firm mattress but ours was possibly a bit too firm, not sure if you could request a different room with a different mattress type. Overall, good base for exploring, but too small a room to spend more than a couple of days in.
