“Friendly staff, location good, decor 'crazy'”
Reviewed 13 August 2013

Staff here were great. All spoke perfect English, made every effort to make us feel at home. Even the room cleaning staff were friendly. They do charge you 10€ to park your car in their empty car park, and the gym is not worth visiting, but the rooms are comfortable and big, bathrooms are large and the decor is french, if not that tasteful. We had a great stay and it's just €1.40 to catch the bus from outside the door into central Bordeaux. We will return.

The hotel is ok, comfortable rooms with good size, and friendly staff. The hotel is not quite in the chartrons area. Maybe it is gegrafically in the chartrons district, but it si quite far away from the bars, restaurants and museums that people usually asociatte with such area. There is a good 10 min walk to the nearest tram stop.

A good standard of room with coffee and tea making facilities, minibar and bathroom. my wife really appreciated the soap! Quick checking in and out. Excellent staff on the desk and in administration. Used as a stopover in our way north and so we did not fully investigate the public or dining arrangements - hence no comments. Secure lift arrangements with key holders only allowed to enter and gain access to the upper levels. Parking available in nearby streets without any problem. My wife forgot some clothes that she had hung in the wardrobe and the hotel arranged to send them on to the UK very promptly. Excellent email communication. If and when, I should be back in Bordeaux, it will suffice to say we shall stay here! Reliable with no nonsense easy pace to say!

Room Tip: Make sure you book in advance!

Good in parts best describes our three night experience at this hotel. Warm, friendly and very helpful reception was matched by similar service elsewhere. Our room was spacious, quiet had a huge bed with fine linen, but overall was depressing due to the dark décor. It also had only one comfortable chair which, combined with the clothes hanging and storage, gave the impression that the room was somehow meant for single occupation.

The bathroom was a real let down. Not only a small bath in length terms, but one that narrowed at the bottom and pinched at the shower end. This made it very difficult to get out as my wife, not a large lady, found out when I had to engage the help of a female receptionist to extract her. The over bath shower also presented problems as there was no room to manoeuvre under the spray. The washbasin was of the mini butler style; flat, no bowl and, unlike the bed linen, towels were thin budget items.

Food was good, both at breakfast and at dinner both of which offered variety whilst the choice on the wine list was fair.

An insurmountable problem with this hotel is its location. It's out of town, and in a seedy, run down area. Yes, there's a one way bus stop nearby, but the tram is a trek away as is the Quai des Marques.

Overall, and notwithstanding the excellent staff, this hotel gives the impression of having been forgotten by head office. The rendering is flaking from the walls in places, light bulbs are inoperative, foliage in the courtyard is dead, flower boxes empty, and the roof of the courtyard is unfinished.

Very luxury hotel few km from the center. Its good to take a tram, it took 10 minutes walk and 10 minutes by tram to get to the center. So location is not so special, but the rest was perfect! Room was clean with luxury bathroom! Breakfast great.

We are currently staying at this hotel and we are finding the room to be clean, large and spacious but the decoration is probably not the most tasteful. The staffs are very helpful as mentioned earlier by everyone else on TA so its not a bad hotel at all.

However there are a few things which this hotel needs to work on to make it a true 4 star. The hotel car park is only connected to the hotel foyer with stars. We didn't know this before parking the car so we had to drag 4 very heavy bags up the stairs to the hotel foyer. (I know not everyone staying at the hotel will be travelling with heavy bags but its just inconvenient for us because we're on a two months holiday so we do have a lot of bags!)

The other thing I'd like to point out is the level of quality/service from the restaurant. We have just had dinner here tonight and picked the express set menu, which was very good value for €12. Remember though - you get what you pay for! The chicken I ordered was cold (but definitely cooked) and when I tried to explain it to the waitress, she didn't quite understand me. Eventually, she took the chicken away and bought it back after reheating. My conclusion is: the restaurant is probably serving precooked food and heating it up upon order) Mmmh, mercure restaurant serving microwave food...

One very very important thing I want mercure management to correct immediately is the level of English competency amognst their hotel restaurant staff. Especially if their entire menu is in French! My partner ordered a fish main course but the waitress did not explain how it was served. The fish came out served on a bed of large beans. And my partner's allergic to beans!!! We didn't bothered telling the waitress and simply ate around it. Along side, there was also a mash of some sort which my partner also skipped because we simply cannot be sure whether it contains more beans! We can accept a hotel serving not-so-great food however when the staff cannot fully explain the dish to you in English, it really is quite worrying due to food allergies. Luckily, the bean was quite obvious looking in this dish, but if he had mistakenly eaten the beans then it would've been quite dangerous!! Rushing to the emergency room is not what anyone's looking for in a holiday.

If we had a choice of restaurant in the area, we definitely wouldn't have eaten here!

Open windows, comfortable bed, clean rooms, FRIENDLY service...
What's not to like? Breakfast in the hotel, close to the river and sights. Bike rental just outside... This hotel is great, it had a place to park our bus for a couple hours until all our rooms were ready.

The staff was so incredibly helpful that I would go back anytime. I had a room that faced the rear of the structure and it was quiet and relaxing.

Eat at the tent restaurants in the Allee!

Room Tip: Rear rooms are quiet with no traffic noise.
