Hotel Mercure Bordeaux Centre Gare Saint Jean
Ranked #37 of 177 Hotels in Bordeaux
Reviewed 30 May 2014 via mobile

This hotel was clean and quiet. The room was reasonably sized, albeit with a huge bed. As is usual with some hotel chains, the WC was separate from the bathroom which I always find a bit strange. The hotel is handy for the main station and is right on the tram line to the centre. It is about a twenty minute walk to the centre.

On the negative side the air-conditioning wasn't great and the restaurant was closed. Even getting a drink in the bar took some effort.

If this was a 3* hotel I might have given a higher rating, but its supposed to be 4* and so needs to be of a higher standard.

My partner and I had an excellent time in Bordeaux and stay at this hotel. The hotel was clean and well located to travel into the tourist areas of Bordeaux. The best part however was speaking with Natalie at the hotel, ask for her the next time you visit the hotel. She has a wealth of knowlege about the area, passionate about her job and always willing to help. A very classy lady that can point you to the right locations to see and dine at. Our excellent stay and experience was largely due to her recommendations and friendly persona. There should be more hotel staff like this at hotels - my parter and I have travelled to many many places and we always are greatful to meetg staff like this. Many thanks Natalie.

The room was spacious, the staff very helpful and friendly - but the breakfast could have been more interesting. The hotel appeared clean and well kept. I had a shower and toilet separated. I've never seen it at other hotels. If you order a taxi, ask the staff to order a driver who take credit cards. None of the three drivers I used had it and they all asked for cash. And it was VERY
expensive. I guess I was fooled.

We stayed two separate nights in bordeaux in transit to and from st emillion.
Location: very close to the train station. If you arrive late at night like we did ensure you have a detailed map of exactly where you are going. Its far too short to take a taxi but we got a little lost and the adjacent streets are seedy but not too dangerous. Lighting of the street waspoor at times. Alternatively catching the tram one stop up will have you outside the doors.
Service: pretty prompt. Ask about wifi and if you are on the first floor like we were on the first night the internet had no signal so we had to sit in the reception. Also double check we had booked through expedia and we were sure we had paid but they printed out a full bill. So double check- it was resolved quick
Rooms: clean, comfortable and small but fine for a night or too.
Breakfast: good selection of food, cereal hot and cold and pastry. Convenient if you are up and on the move early.
Summary:
Close to train and tram station
Clean and comfortable
Good for a quick overnight stay.
Can walk to city in about20mins
Area around is not good for food but not far to city

I stayed 2 nights in April. The hotel is a short walk from the railway station, so is also convenient for the Navette shuttle bus from the airport.
Checkin was easy and efficient. The two lifts are both fast and I hardly ever had to wait long for one.
I had a privilege room on the 4th floor - larger rooms than the normal ones with a terrace outside and a minibar inside.

The room was a good size, plenty of room for storing things and a good sized work desk. the usual problems of not enough sockets for laptop/ipad/iphone but unplugging various appliances solved that. The bed was huge and comfortable, the bathrobes fluffy and copious amounts of complementary toiletries.

My only real niggle with the room was the lack of proper cups and glasses. Although a Nespresso machine was provided with capsules, the only cups were paper ones, although the minibar was stocked with complementary soft drinks, the only glasses were plastic ones.

It's only a 20 minute walk to the centre of Bordeaux, or a short tram ride from the stop almost outside the hotel.

My biggest complaint was breakfast on both days. Service was really slow and inefficient resulting in places not being cleared for well over 30 minutes. This meant no places being available or sitting at a table with used cups and plates around you. The breakfast was just about OK, nothing special at all. In future I would go to one of the cafes in the area or at the rail station.

So, a reasonable hotel, if a bit tired round the edges, in a convenient location but let down by the breakfast service.

Room Tip: Its worth the extra money to go for a privilege room

I spent one night on this Hotel. Its amazing. Very nice lobby. The decorations of the rooms are absolutely stunning! Snacks gifts in the room were delicious! The bathroom perfect! And a train passes infront of the entrance, and you can travel in few minutes to the historic center of Bordeaux!

We stayed one night on our way through Bordeaux. It's about a 5 minute walk from the train station and was a safe walk there. The reception was extremely nice and helpful. Unfortunately there is no room service on weekends, but they do have an agreement with a pizza chain. They order for you and it comes straight to your room, excellent service.

The room was very spacious and very nice. The bed is probably one of the largest I have ever seen; it was wider than long!!

All in all a very nice hotel, and I would definitely stay here again!
