My husband and I joined Will and the SportsPulsions crew for a guided tour of the Paris Roubaix bike race this year. It was our first experience with a guide for a bike race and I was impressed in a variety of ways. First, it was fantastic to have a truly international group for the tour. Our group wasn't that large (maybe 20?) but we represented every continent except Antarctica. It was fun to join people from other cultures united by our love for cycling. Second, Will and his staff are both professional and laid back, meaning that if there were any mishaps or stresses along the way, we didn't notice them, and even though we would disperse and reunite to go to the next viewing spot, the experience never felt rushed, and we never felt herded. Finally, and most important, this crew knows professional bike racing inside and out and is game to parlay this knowledge to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. The finale of Paris Roubaix is in a velodrome and, though good seats were expected, what was delivered were phenomenal seats at one of the closest finishes in race history. Apparently, one of the SportsPulsions guys saw a guy he knew who was managing access and, voila, we suddenly had media-level access to the race ending. I really enjoyed the spirit of fun and camaraderie that pervaded throughout the day, and, when you couple that with their "insider" knowledge of these events and this business, you get a fun day with the best possible access. I really hope to go again this spring!
