Hotel Cafe de Paris
Ranked #6 of 64 Hotels in Biarritz
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 June 2011

We stayed at Cafe de Paris in a suite facing the ocean for 3 nights and especially loved the central location and the views from the room. The hotel is in the pedestrian section of town so when we arrived by car, we had to call to find it. The hotel employee was very kind and told us that we could pull our car right in front of the hotel to unload and she nicely helped us with our luggage. The parking entrance is in front of Galeries Lafayette; the pedestrian exit is in front of Cafe de Paris while the car exit is on the seaside. The room was lovely: modern, with all of the amenities one can expect from a 4* and very comfortable. As we were 3 people sharing the room, I slept on an unusually comfortable double bed facing the water and a few steps down the main room, which nicely provided privacy. Biarritz is a great town, with lots of charm and good restaurants. We especially enjoyed Bar Jean for their tapas, le Pim'Pi for its family atmosphere and classical French bistro menu and the fresh fish at Chez Albert by Port Vieux, right at the foot of the port. Will be back!

We booked Hotel Cafe de Paris after reviewing Biarritz hotels on Trip Advisor. Though it is expensive It seemed to be the most suitable for our requirements - short stay in luxury hotel.

We booked in March 2010 and the quoted rate was 423.30 Euros per night. We travelled by TGV to Biarritz and hired a car at the station. We had been told to park the car in one of the nearby car parks which we did and laboriously lugged our luggage to the hotel. When we checked in we told the very pleasant receptionist that we had parked in a public car park which was some way from the hotel and had to return to get remaining luggage. No comment or offer of help to our room on the 3rd floor.

The room was small but with a large balcony, as it turned out it would have been better for us to book a large room without a balcony since the balcony is westerly, facing the sea and gets no sun in the morning. Biarritz weather is very unpredicatable and the sea front is windy so really the balcony could only be used on a sunny afternoon - when we were on the beach. We do not know whether there were other guests occupying the third floor but we did not see the balconies used during the whole of our stay. The bedroom was so small it was difficult to manoeveure around the very comfortable king-size bed. There was little cupboard/hanging space and no full length hanging for dresses, trousers etc and no mirror in the bedroom so one had to wait until the bathroom was vacated if a mirror was required. The air conditioning in the room worked very well and quietly.

Only one side of the french doors to the balcony would open, although not fully as the bed was in the way. We tried without success to open the other door to get air into the room but were unable to do so. We eventually asked Reception to do this and two lovely ladies arrived with little clue how to do it. They eventually found out that the mechanism had corroded/locked and used tablespoons and brute force (my husband) to open it. Perhaps an indication that this door had never been opened?

The shower room was very good, spacious and well equipped with two wash basins, dressing gowns, towels etc.

We asked about breakfast but were not told about the breakfast room mentioned by previous reviewers but told to have breakfast on our balcony. We knew that was not a good idea so went out for breakfast each day - probably a good plan considering breakfast reviews. There are some wonderful restaurants in Biarritz so we did not try the hotel food until two nights before we left. It was mostly inedible, although a fillet steak was good, the accompanying chips were most peculiar and tuna requested medium rare was well overdone and the accompanying piperade tasted as though it had been made with canned tomatoes. The waitress was adamant that it was not. In fairness to the staff, they were concerned that we had not eaten our food and deducted 10 euros from the bill. We were treated to so much good food in nearby restaurants that it is surprising they don't try harder.

As we were paying the bill on departure we saw a notice about repayment of car parking fees but were told that we had not asked for this at the time of making our booking. Giving them the benefit of the doubt there may have been a language barrier but my husband, who made the booking, speaks excellent French and we doubt if it was mentioned.

Having made all these grouses, we must add that all the young ladies on Reception were extremely pleasant and helpful within their capabilities.

This hotel has few facilities. There is no communal sitting area for guests apart from the bar and, of course, no swimming pool. This is an over-priced hotel in an expensive City.

We loved Biarritz and will return but not to Hotel Cafe de Paris. Either we will rent an apartment or pay more to stay at Hotel Du Palais which is not so much more expensive, has beautifully appointed restaurants and sitting areas as well as extensive grounds and two swimming pools.

Very nice in most respects. Small but rooms clean and stylish. We got one with sea view and terrace which is worth upgrading for. Staff professional and courteous. Great location, within walking distance of everything. Not cheap necessarily but neither is Biarritz. Only disappointment was breakfast room which was like a corridor on 1st floor and ridicuously tight and narrow with diners bumping into one another - dont know why they didnt use the main restaurant below it which was a beautiful room. Choice and quality of food for breakfast was sub 4 star. For €200+ per night one should get fresh coffee and not have it in a flask on a communal serving area. Overall probably a small complaint and I would recommend.

The hotel is well located and stylish although a little hard to find even with satnav/GPS as there are bollards preventing access. We were told to park in the nearby underground public car park and we would be given a get-out-free card when we were ready to leave.

We had a warm welcome and a lady took our wheely luggage up the lift and into the room. I asked about the TV (something I usually have no interest in) and it took two ladies to sort out the set up as first it has to be unlocked at reception, which had been overlooked.

I was really looking forward to staying in this stylish hotel and the junior suite contained everything promised and had a direct sea view. The bed and sofa however were against the same wall, which happened to give mainly a view of a building, whereas a little thought in placing these on the opposite wall would have given a fabulous view of the lighthouse, the rocks and the bay. The bathroom was glitzy and modern but the layout was poor. (Why such basic mistakes in such a cleverly designed building?!)

After unpacking, we decided to have drinks just outside but it was hot and without any umbrellas so we moved to a shady table closer to the hotel. Even though it was not set (other tables nearby were), we were told it was only for eating! This was at 5pm, with no customers at any of the eating tables. 3 soft drinks and 1 cocktail came to 22 Euros.

At bedtime, although the curtains were not lightproof, we had a good night's sleep on the comfortable bed. Next morning, building works nearby started quite early. Even worse, we were startled to find breakfast served on a narrow galley overlooking the main restaurant - although room service is on offer. The buffet seemed meager and the quality of the ingredients extremely poor, in fact (even though 4 times the price) much worse than the B&B we stayed in the next night.

The overcooked, dry and cold scrambled eggs gave me a stomach-ache later, even though I took only one bite. The leathery, stale croissants were genuinely the worst we have ever had in France. Coffee was average and the waiter disappeared forever, once he had served this.

Later, we discovered that our junior suite did not in fact match the description on their website. We were subsequently told, on calling to ask about the differences, that our room no 207 was a junior suite and was larger than a standard double room, but they admitted it was the same length and only slightly wider. In fact, our room is pictured on their website as "standard double" although omitting the sofa!

The real junior suites are on a higher floor and have a separate sitting room area several steps below the bedroom area. Bait and switch definitely applies to such treatment. This is made even worse by the fact that hotel wasn't even half full. Why would an emptyish hotel give guests a worse room when they could even have upgraded us and made a good review much more likely?! They must not get much repeat business as they would otherwise surely have tried harder.

Our "package" (not much cheaper than the rack rate shown on the back of our bedroom door) gave us a junior suite, parking and breakfast for 340Euros (breakfast is otherwise 20Euros per person). What a ripoff even by Biarritz standards...

And our credit card was charged the full amount at the time of booking.

Stayed at this hotel with family for 2 nights. A nicely furnished hotel with friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. The whole of Biarritz is expensive but we weren't prepared for the outrageous prices charged within the hotel for drinks and food. Breakfast was a nightmare with guests being seated, 2 to a table on the first floor in a narrow corridor overlooking the dining room. No explanation forcoming for this totally inadequate seating arrangement or why guests could not use the dining room. The selection of food available for breakfast was mediocre and inferior to what is usually presented at 4 star hotels. Certainly not worth the high charge made for breakfast.

We loved the beachside setting with great views of the beach. (Living not far from the beach in Australia, we particularly loved the sound and smell of the waves, topped off by a couple of the friendly staff reminiscing with us about their times living in Australia).

The hotel looked after us from start to finish. We arrived very early from an overnight train into Hendaye and they put us straight into a very comfortable room. (As other reviews mention, it has recently been refurbished.) Everyone there was friendly and helpful throughout the day and in the restaurant in the evening. We were on a package that included a bottle of champagne and a couple of other extras and they were good enough to provide a particularly good bottle for us (which they didnt need to do, but it was very appreciated!).

We picked it a day or two before we arrived -- when we found ourselves with a night in Biarritz which we hadn't expected -- based mainly on Tripadvisor reviews and (as usually happens) that served us very well. Travelling at this time of the year also meant that there were substantial price reductions and, like another reviewer, we were able to achieve that by going direct to the hotel.

we stayed for 3 nights over the Easter weekend and found this hotel to be in a great location in Biarittz. The room (401) was really spacious and the bathroom was lovely. We found the staff to be very welcoming too,our only criticism was they were not so informed about public transport in the area but they really were so friendly it made this less of an issue. We would chose here again if coming to Biarittz particularly if slightly off season as not having a pool etc.. is not a problem when you are out and about exploring when its too chilly to sunbathe on this rather lovely Atlantic coast.
