I am just back from a week long stay in Sofitel Biarritz.
I first discovered the hotel three years ago and have returned every summer since.
The great thing about Biarritz is that it takes just less than two hours to get there from Dublin and the taxi ride from the airport to the town centre is just 15 minutes.
The Sofitel is located on the beach. When you book a room in the Sofitel, make sure to ask for a room with a sea view. It's a bit more expensive but absolutely worth it. The views of the ocean are stunning and there is nothing more relaxing than going to sleep at night with the distant sound of ocean waves in your ears.
My room 503 was large with a good view of the sea and the pool area. The double bed is enormous, you have to almost climb into it. The adjoining bathroom is a decent size.
The outdoor pool is a good size and has great views of the ocean. The water is warm and the surrounding sun lounging area is well staffed.
Breakfast is buffet style and was included in my package. In fact breakfast is so good you really don't need to eat for the rest of the day but if you feel hungry, there is the option to order bar food and drinks through the day from your sunlounger.
Barfood is also served in the bar area and the more formal dining restaurant is also open for lunch
Weatherwise, it can be mixed. Two days out my seven day stay were cloudy and it rained a little bit. One day you might be cursing yourself that you didn't pack a jumper and the next day you are cursing yourself for not bringing enough suncream. But with the location of Biarritz, that's what you should expect.
One of the big attractions of the Sofitel is its range of beauty treatments and water massage facilities. There is also the "Relaxing Room" where you can relax in total silence. If you are feeling healthy, the juice bar will serve you a healthy detox juice.
The hotel staff are warm and friendly and after three years they know me now which is lovely especially as I travel on my own each summer. I have also observed that like me many guests make repeat visits each year which is always a good recommendation for any hotel.
For evening dinner, the hotel restaurant is top class and you can expect to pay about €50 a head for a three course meal.
If you really want to switch off for a week and totally relax, then I can't recommend The Sofitel highly enough.
