After touring Les Comarelles we drove back to Les Eyzies to see the prehistoric museum at 11:15 before the 12:30 lunch closure (the last admittance before lunch is 11:45). The museum (6E admission p.p.) was pretty good but information is not displayed very well. You are also allowed access outside at the top of the building where the old chateau and a prehistory lab are built into the massive wall overhang. After seeing the exhibits we were outside here enjoying the view and the ambiance of just being there when to our surprise we were escorted by a security guard down and out to the main lobby arriving there at 12:14pm!! There we found ALL the museum staff (15+) standing around, waiting for us to leave so they could go for lunch en masse and EARLY. Only in France! Anyway, our allotted 59 minutes in the museum were pretty good, it's interesting but maybe build in a little bit of a buffer time to account for lunch! Allow 59 minutes for your visit! If you have enough time come here, otherwise just go see an actual cave.

Excellent museum very specific to human prehistory. Videos of tool making were especially interesting

This is a great place for adults and children alike. Set in the rocks, this gorgeous museum is very informative and easy to navigate. You can spend a couple of hours here, and pick up a lot of information on the lives, habits and occupations of our ancestors.

Presentation of materials are poor. They need to have a sound loop for the non French speakers. Very about man on the door. Price is fair.

This is one of the rare museums that still give you guided tours and our guide was absolutely wonderful. Like a true guide she had a contagious enthusiasm for the subject and eagerness for us to share in the best the museum had to offer! Try to replicate this using an audio guide...

We came after the museum reopened after lunch and took a 2:15 tour offered in English - it is highly recommended to get the most out of your visit. The tour was scheduled to only run for 1:30, but we ended up spending 2 hours and only covered the highlights (and we were the only ones on the tour!)

While you see wall paintings in nearby caves, the museum hosts a remarkable exhibition of prehistoric artifacts, all created over 10,000 years ago and some of them true works of art or very skillfully crafted tools. The visit to the museum shines a new light on thevabilities of our prehistoric ancestors.
